One of the most remote and unspoilt places you can visit on a Tanzania safari holiday is the Selous Reserve. This reserve is a vast area of untouched wilderness that accounts for about 5% of Tanzania’s total land mass. The reserve was named after Frederick Selous – one of the great explorers and a big game hunter, turned conservationist. He was also an accomplished author and his books were very popular in Victorian England.
The Selous has a diverse ecosystem that consists of forests, woodlands, lagoons, sandbanks, volcanic springs and lakes that flow from the Rufiji River – the lifeblood of the park. The River offers some spectacular game viewing, especially during the dry season when huge herds of elephant flock to its banks. The dry season is also the setting for a migration of elephants that takes place between the Selous and the Niassa Reserve in Mozambique. Grazing antelope, crocodiles, hippos, and good numbers of the rare and endangered wild dog are commonly seen and the scenery here is so spectacular, it appeals to photographers and wildlife documentary film makers of all levels. The Selous also offers a good variety of activities including tiger fishing, walking safaris, game drives, boat game viewing and horse riding safaris.
A Tanzania safari to the Selous Game Reserve combines well with a Kenya safari to the Samburu National Reserve or the Masai Mara. It also combines well with a luxury beach getaway to the spice island of Zanzibar or a few days at the unspoilt and remote beaches of Mozambique.
