Location

Located in the southeast of Sabah, Borneo Rainforest Lodge is on the banks of the Danum River amid a reserve spanning 43,800 hectares. This lush wonderland is the home to numerous species seen in few other locations; not just orangutans, but also banteng, clouded leopard, slow loris, proboscis monkey, and the critically endangered Bornean pygmy elephant.

The nearest town, Lahad Datu, is a two-hour drive away, but flights from Kota Kinabalu Airport take about an hour.

Accommodation

There’s a Hollywood Hills vibe to the 31 timber and glass villas at Borneo Rainforest Lodge, but instead of looking out over the lights of Los Angeles, guests gaze across the Danum River and into the primaeval spectacle of pristine rainforest.

Guests choose from a range of sizes and configurations, from standard ‘Jungle’ chalets to the most desirable double-storey premium villa, which comes complete with a private infinity pool.
In between, there are options with hot tubs and plunge pools, but every chalet here comes with enormous windows and private decks for a sense of being at one with the forest. And rest assured, of course, that all conveniences and facilities within the villas are top-notch.

Meals in the vaulted communal dining area of the lodge are diverse and delicious, but with huge windows onto the forest, you’ll be reminded that you haven’t come here for the food. The ecosystem is the draw. Indeed, knowing that previous guests of the lodge include Prince William, Princess Kate, and Dame Judy Dench is less important than the expectation of the real celebrities: orangutans, the other rare megafauna, the birds and the huge trees to be found in the forest.

Experiences
Much of the rainforest here has stood untouched for the last 130 million years, and there are species associated only with class 6 Virgin Forest. It is consequently one of the most biodiverse places on the planet.

  • Get right into the trees on the Canopy Walkway. It’s 360 metres long and almost 30 metres above the ground.
  • Take a hike to the Kadazandusun burial site, known as ‘Coffin Cliff’, where indigenous people have traditionally buried their dead in ironwood coffins within the rock face.
  • Cool off in a natural river jacuzzi and then have the thrill of tubing on the Danum River.
  • A guided trek to Fairy Falls and Serpent Falls comes with the added benefit of potentially spotting orangutans and pygmy elephants. The reserve is also home to the Sunda clouded leopard and Bornean sun bears.
  • There are 320 bird species in the area. See if you can spot the Bornean Bristlehead, Bornean Ground-Cuckoo, Bulwer's Pheasant, Black-throated Wren-Babbler, or the Dusky Munia.
  • Don’t forget the plants, which your guide will delight in telling you about. There are about 200 species of plant for every hectare of forest.

Conservation
Conservation
Borneo Rainforest Lodge serves as a primary research site for the Danum Orangutan Research Project (DORP), an ongoing study of orangutan ecology. This project is a collaboration between the Wildlife Research Centre at Kyoto University and the Sabah Foundation. The lodge also actively plants native species around its site to provide crucial food sources and natural habitat for Bornean fauna.
Community
Community
Borneo Rainforest Lodge proudly maintains an active Corporate Social Responsibility team dedicated to implementing impactful initiatives for local communities and schools. Additionally, the managers at Borneo Rainforest Lodge actively seek out enthusiastic individuals from the local community, including recent fresh college graduates, providing them with an educational and hands-on training in the intricacies of the hospitality industry.
Environment
Environment
Segregated non-recyclable waste from the lodge is sold to local recycling centres and the earnings are then invested back into a monthly environmental training programme for colleagues. Organic wastes are routinely collected, weighed and further processed to be composted into fertilisers which the landscaping team uses in their nursery.

5 Spectacular Wildlife Encounters in India

The vast majority of people think about India primarily as a cultural destination. Yes, the Taj Mahal is a must-see, and the country boasts dozens of UNESCO-listed ruins and monuments, not to mention dazzling festivals and other events. But the landscapes and wildlife were here long before the people, and the subcontinent still has extraordinary wild places you can explore, from the sands of the Thar Desert to the backwaters of Kerala; the high Himalayas to the jungles of Northeast India.

Top 10 Experiences in India

The young poet and playwright Kiran Millwood Hargrave said "India is a place where colour is doubly bright. Pinks that scald your eyes, blues you could drown in." It's a quote that captures the marvellous intensity of experiencing India. You’ll flit like a butterfly from a gilded palace to a sun baked fortress, to a bustling bazaar, to an encounter with a big cat, all the while drinking in the colours, sounds, aromas and the relentless energy of Indian life. That collage of glimpses will be there to savour years after you return. Here we share 10 unmissable experiences while travelling in India.
