Conservation
Conservation
One of Chiawa Camp’s noteworthy conservation successes is that it was the first operator to practice catch & release sport angling and they subsequently successfully lobbied the government to impose a ban on the killing of any fish species in the Lower Zambezi National Park (LZNP). This ban remains in place, and Chiawa is now lobbying for it to be extended to Zambia’s other national parks, and for better control on fishing and boating within the LZNP. Further to this, Chiawa provided strategy, funding and logistical support for a Cheetah repopulation program through the Zambia Wildlife Authority and Cheetah Conservation Fund of Namibia.
Community
Community
In February 2009, Chiawa Camp established and implemented the Lower Zambezi Conservation Collection in order to raise additional funding towards environmental education and conservation activity. This education is vital in protecting the fragile ecosystem of the Lower Zambezi through the people who live there.
Environment
Environment
Chiawa Camp was designed and built to the code of the Environmental Council of Zambia and Zambia Wildlife Authority. Their use of renewable materials in construction, locally purchased natural materials and employment of a strong Reduce/Reuse/Recycle ethos in camp has reduced the camp’s carbon footprint dramatically. Furthermore, Chiawa have reduced their power usage where possible, replacing their boat motors, reducing their emissions and fossil fuel consumption by 50% and installing LED bulbs throughout.
