Lewa House

From its very beginning, Lewa Conservancy and Lewa House have been about family, and with two-bedroomed cottages sleeping four, this is the ideal place to bring your brood. Owners Sophie and Calum McFarlane raised their kids here: the fifth generation of the family to live in this special place. Location

Lewa House is integral to the story of the landscape in which it nestles: the Lewa Conservancy, a remarkable wildlife paradise that was awarded UNESCO World Heritage listing in 2013. Starting with a small, fenced and guarded rhino sanctuary in the 1970s, the reserve now encompasses 27,000 hectares of savanna grasslands, wetlands, ravines and hills.

Within these diverse habitats, you’ll find the ‘Big Five’ animals, with more than 10% of Kenya’s rhinos joined by an even more endangered animal – Grevy’s zebra. Sightings of rare, reticulated giraffes, desert-adapted oryx and African painted dogs are some of the other safari treats.

To the south is the Ngare Ndare Forest, a lush and shady environment watered by the meltwater from the snows of Mount Kenya, the peak that’s ever-present on the horizon of Lewa.

Accommodation

Imagine what you would wish for from family safari accommodation, and Lewa House will live up to it. The three cottages in the original 1920s homestead certainly have a look that appeals to all ages, with rough-hewn and chunky furniture surrounded by cedar wood, thatch and stone; but the configuration is the key to comfort. They have the ideal two-bedroom combination of king and twin, both with ensuites, so getting under each other’s feet is unlikely. There’s even more space if you include the veranda and the lush gardens beyond.

If you’re a couple, your abode is even more enticing, for you’ll be staying in one of the super-stylish ‘earthpods’. Looking like hobbit homes designed by Antonio Gaudí, these organically-shaped adobe and stone cocoons are cool in all senses and even collect their own rainwater. Three of them come with outdoor baths for wallowing beneath the starry heavens.
At an altitude of 2,000 metres, the evenings in some months can be chilly, but this is just an excuse for retiring to the lounge of the main house for the comfort of a fireside sofa beneath the vaulted thatched ceiling.

When it’s warmer, your spot for a cooling drink will be the expansive shady veranda or perhaps soaking in the pool. Seasonally heated, the pool’s year-round appeal is the fact that it looks out over a waterhole that attracts wildlife from far and wide.

As for dining, the on-site farm produces ingredients for breakfasts in the bush on safari, for lunches followed by snoozes, and for hearty fine dining in the evening at the large family dining table.

Experiences

  • The Lewa Conservancy is a place for safari excursions full of Big Five possibilities, and they’re just some of 70 species of mammals that have been observed. The rhinos became so numerous that the fence with the neighbouring Borana conservancy was removed so that they could roam even more freely.
  • Some folk come here to complete the Lewa Marathon, a world-famous event that happens every June and raises money for conservation initiatives.
  • Quietly creep through the yellow fever tree woodlands on a walking safari. You may hear the leopard warnings from the groups of vervet monkeys.
  • Visit the radio room of Conservation HQ and learn how they coordinate field rangers, field operators, anti-poaching rangers, gatekeepers, baby rhino keepers and the dog tracker unit.
  • A safari on a horse enables you to approach wildlife in a completely different and immersive way. If you want a higher vantage point – and a bit of fun – opt for a camel.
  • Enjoy the lush appeal of the neighbouring Ngare Ndare Forest Reserve, a place where you can get into the canopy on a walkway 10 metres from the ground.
  • Spend time with the Il N’gwesi people of the northern Masai, particularly seeing some of the projects funded by the Lewa Conservancy.

Conservation
Conservation
Conservancy and tourism fees paid by every guest that stays at Lewa directly contributes to the operating costs of the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy. Total tourism fees typically contribute over 20% of the total raised by the Conservancy, while visitors on safari also make up a significant proportion of the donations to the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy.
Environment
Environment
The property is made using local materials, not only supporting local communities, but also reducing air miles. Furthermore, structures are built in an unobtrusive way, nestled into the landscape in order to minimise any impact on the local ecosystem.
Community
Community
Lewa House helps support the conservancy to invest extensively in the local community through several innovative programmes, ranging from micro-credit schemes to medical clinics and schools.

What Really Matters to Young Children on a Kenya Family Safari

I have spent the last 18 years travelling to some of the planet’s most incredible places under the guise of ‘work’. For 11 of those, I have been waiting for my young family to be old enough to join me. In October 2022, that time finally came. Our first family safari in Kenya was perhaps even more special as, like many holidays, it had been postponed twice due to the COVID pandemic but, wow, was it worth the wait!
