Location

With the dramatic presence of snow-capped Mount Kenya on its southern horizon, the Lewa Conservancy stretches northwards to the arid lands of Tassia and Il Ngwesi. Within its 26,000 hectares you’ll find golden savanna, open acacia woodland, riverine thickets, and the lush forests of Ngare Ndare. All this adds up to a perfect mosaic of habitats for extraordinary wildlife diversity and therefore tremendous safaris.

So successful has the Lewa Conservancy been at allowing rhinos to breed that it reached carrying capacity. That meant that the fence with neighbouring Borana Conservancy needed to be removed to allow the rhinos more space to roam, and it’s near that unfenced boundary that you’ll find Lewa Safari Camp. It’s the only accommodation in the area that is directly owned by the Conservancy, so you can be assured that staying here has a direct benefit for the animals and the people of the area.

Accommodation

If you’re one of those people who, quite rightly, think that a safari is best experienced with just canvas between you and the sounds of the bush, then Lewa Safari Camp not only fits that bill, but does so in style. There are eleven tents here, each with that feel of heritage safari intrepidness, though undeniably enhanced by each being under a shady canopy of thatch that extends to a private veranda.

With a platform of a polished floor and a permanent and decadent ensuite, each tent is a league away from the ‘roughing it’ end of the spectrum. Want to share the luxury and wildlife with the kids? There are two family tented units made up of a double and a twin tent (each with bathroom) with a shared veranda.
When you aren’t gazing out from your own terrace, you’ll be tempted to sink into a sofa in the golden glow of the main lodge’s homely lounge. The camp is at altitude, so you may be thankful of the open fire as you browse a book from the library. Between safari excursions, you’re likely to be more tempted by the curvaceous outdoor pool with its giraffe-style paving set within lush lawns.

Meals here start with canapés and drinks from the bar, and there’ll be sipping on the veranda while watching for the arrival of the evening game at the waterhole. There’s a hide down there for closer views too. Evening dining is at individual tables for that romantic feel, and if you read ‘experiences’ below, you can find out where that led to for one famous couple of former guests.

Experiences

  • Wildlife viewing here is superb; the private conservancy is home to over 400 species of birdlife and 70 recorded species of mammal including a large population of both the white and black rhino alongside good numbers of elephant, lion, cheetah, hyena, leopard, zebra, giraffe, buffalo, oryx, eland, and occasionally packs of the elusive wild dog.
  • Being in a private conservancy means that very few other visitors are allowed to be in the area and so you’ll be able to explore with a feeling of exclusive exploration.
  • If you’re travelling with younger children, they will love the warrior training programme where young safari-goers will learn how to track animals, safely throw spears, and even build bush camps.
  • You can see this incredible conservancy is several different ways, each offering something unique. In the company of an expert guide, you can enjoy game drives, bush walks or even horseback (or camel-back!) safaris.
  • Venture into the nearby Ngare Ndare Forest where you can hike forest trails, swim in pools beneath beautiful waterfalls, explore the canopy walkways and even take a picnic high up in the treetops.
  • Have a romantic meal looking out over the savanna, knowing that Lewa Safari Camp was where Prince William proposed to Kate.

What Really Matters to Young Children on a Kenya Safari

I have spent the last 18 years travelling to some of the planet’s most incredible places under the guise of ‘work’. For 11 of those, I have been waiting for my young family to be old enough to join me. In October 2022, that time finally came. Our first family safari in Kenya was perhaps even more special as, like many holidays, it had been postponed twice due to the COVID pandemic but, wow, was it worth the wait!
