Sarara Camp
Populations of elephant and rhino, for example, were once dwindling here, but today around 5,000 elephant inhabit the area - the second largest elephant population in Kenya. Other species you're likely to see include buffalo, kudu, reticulated giraffe, impala and wild dog.
You’ll be sleeping in one of six spacious en-suite, thatched-roofed tents. The position of each has been carefully considered to ensure your mountain views are never compromised. Tents are open-fronted, laying the vast expanse of the conservancy out before you.
Elsewhere in the camp you’ll find an open-air dining area, a sitting and bar area, and a natural pool set in the rocks. Just beneath the pool is a waterhole where many species come to quench their thirst. It’s a great spot for wildlife sightings, with elephant, giraffe, antelope, leopard and even wild dog regularly seen here. Be sure to bring your binoculars - a wide range of bird life frequents the area and this is the most relaxing spot to observe them.
- Visit the nearby Reteti Elephant Sanctuary where you’ll don a green keeper’s jacket, help prep the feed for the orphans, and meet their dedicated carers.
- There is a strong focus here on the relationship between the local Samburu people and the camp and so cultural activities are plentiful. Spend time visiting schools and villages, beading with local women, watching a blacksmith crafting over an open fire, and observing the sacred Singing Wells ritual.
- For the epitome of wild experiences, try fly camping where you’ll walk into the wilderness, accompanied by a guide, and sleep under the stars in a small tent.
- Walking is one of our favourite ways to immerse yourself in a new place. Take a leisurely stroll, noticing and learning more about the smaller residents of the conservancy along the way, or you could up the ante and challenge yourself to a mountain hike.
- Head out and explore on horseback, cantering through the foothills of the mountains and getting up close to the area’s wildlife.
