Canoeing down the river at sunset from Chongwe River Camp.

When The Beatles recorded the opening line of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds for their Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album, they could well have been describing the journey as you cruise along the Zambezi River, an evening river safari flanked by hippos in Malawi’s Majete Wildlife Reserve, or a glass of something cold and sparkling as you enjoy a sundowner in the sublime Okavango Delta. In fact, it could apply to any number of the dusk-time boat journeys along Africa’s peaceful waterways, where the vivid orange of the sunset gives way with surprising speed to a canopy of diamond-like stars, twinkling in the inky blackness of the night.

As the situation surrounding COVID-19 continues to evolve, our primary concern remains the safety and well-being of our clients, partners and team members.

Every holiday we arrange is uniquely designed to appreciate our clients’ individuality and we are approaching the current situation in the same way.

Guests arriving at Miavana, Madagascar

Close your eyes and picture a scene of Africa. What is it that you see? Is it the wide, open plains and the migrations of thousands of gazelle? Is it the pyramids at Giza, rising out of the desert like mountains? Or is it the rolling vineyards of Stellenbosch, glistening in the sunshine? Whatever your vision, it is unlikely that it is an island, for although there are hundreds, if not thousands, of such enclaves dotted in and around the continent, they are amongst Africa’s best kept secrets.

Bath and view at Duba Plains Camp in Botswana.

Landlocked Botswana is a country of dramatic contrasts: 70% of its territory is covered by the arid expanse which is the Kalahari Desert; but the Okavango River and its delta bring life to fertile oases, and rich grasslands where wildlife thrives.

Nothing quite says luxury travel like an infinity pool: it’s a striking pinnacle of architectural design, but is also indicative of an extraordinary location. After all, what would be the point of having a pool like this unless the views were worthwhile staring at?

Older Family Safaris

Travelling with teenagers can be a nightmare, but it can also be a great joy: as your children get older, you have fewer and fewer chances to spend quality time together as everyone wants to be off doing their own thing. And then, one day, they’ve flown the nest. Their teenage years are precious times for your family, times when you can shape the adults they become, and the interests they share with you in later years. The challenging part of any family vacation with teenagers is convincing them that they want to spend a week (or longer) away from their friends, computers, and things they find familiar. You then have to overcome the perception that everything parents want to do is boring, and make sure that your holiday itinerary includes something to appeal to every member of the group, whatever their age and interests.

A weekend in Cape Town

Cape Town is arguably the most exciting city destination in the whole of Africa. Situated in a stunning seaside location with a mountain backdrop, it gets 10/10 for views. The city boasts first rate hotels and a booming restaurant scene, as well as plenty of varied activities to keep you occupied day and night. Whether you are planning a long weekend’s escape, or want to add a city break onto the end of your South African safari, Cape Town is a destination not to be missed.

Night sky in Africa

Don’t worry, we’re not going to suggest you plan your holiday based on your star sign, or that you visit a far off planet! Astro-tourism is travel with a star gazing theme, and it’ll take you to some of the last great wildernesses in Africa.

Hippo with calf walking and grazing on land

Their chortling grunts are synonymous with a waterborne safari. Sprays of mist as they surface in the golden light of dawn. Adapted to life on land and lake. If you hadn't guessed, we're talking about hippos, one of Africa's most common, but often overlooked characters. Your safari wouldn't be complete without seeing them, so we've collated some of our favourite places to spot the abdominous hippopotomus.

Boating past huge herd of elephant at sunset in Malawi

Conjure up in your mind the wide, open plains of East Africa, the herds of wildebeest on the move, a family of elephants ambling through the mud at the edge of a water hole, and a vast bird circling on the thermals so high in the sky that it appears to be but a pin prick. Where are you? Kenya? Tanzania? How about Malawi? If you want to venture far beyond the crowds and see astounding wildlife in a true, unblemished wilderness, then a safari in under-the-radar Malawi might just be what you're looking for.

Easter in Africa

There are plenty of inspiring places you might choose to spend Easter, from witnessing the Holy Week processions in Seville, to making a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. But if you’re not a practising Christian, or you simply want to enjoy a totally different experience this year, leave a note for the Easter Bunny telling him where to find you and jump on a plane to Africa. It’s the ideal season to explore some of our favourite destinations, and the over commercialisation of Easter seems a million miles away.
