A rhino conservation success story

Lewa

The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy began in 1983 with the aim of protecting Kenya’s rhino population. Today, 255 black rhinos safely roam the lands of Lewa, protected round the clock from poachers. The Lewa Wildlife Conservancy began in 1983 with the aim of protecting Kenya’s rhino population. Today, 255 black rhinos safely roam the lands of Lewa, protected round the clock from poachers.
Why Lewa?
The safe haven of the conservancy allows bountiful wildlife to flourish. This is ‘big five’ territory and aside from rhino and elephant you can see ostrich, giraffe, cheetah and Grevy’s zebra – just to name a few species. Lewa’s undulating landscape is a feast for the eyes and a wonderful place to experience the best of Kenya’s wilderness. Open vehicle game drives are a must, and there’s nothing quite like a horseback safari to feel connected to nature. Or, take a scenic flight to experience Lewa from above.

Superb lodges and camps are peppered throughout Lewa, ensuring a private, upscale safari experience whilst gleaning insights into the work of a modern wildlife conservancy. Learn from anti-poaching professionals how their efforts protect rhino and benefit local communities.
  • A top example of successful wildlife conservation in action.
  • Beautiful scenery supports a variety of birds and mammals, including black rhino.
  • Luxury lodges and camps offer exquisite privacy.
  • Great location for bush walks and anti-poaching experience.
  • Cultural interactions with local communities.
  • Scenic flights offer breathtaking perspectives.

Lewa House in Kenya is more than simply a place to rest your head after your safaris. It’s the intangible warmth of being welcomed as family by owners Calum and Sophie McFarlane with the touches of home that make it a unique experience. You’ll wake in your thatched cottage to share biscuits on the veranda with the resident ‘go-away-birds’, soaking in the landscape of gently sloping plains and distant mountains.

What Really Matters to Young Children on a Kenya Safari

I have spent the last 18 years travelling to some of the planet’s most incredible places under the guise of ‘work’. For 11 of those, I have been waiting for my young family to be old enough to join me. In October 2022, that time finally came. Our first family safari in Kenya was perhaps even more special as, like many holidays, it had been postponed twice due to the COVID pandemic but, wow, was it worth the wait!
