Why Mgahinga?
Three conical extinct volcanoes dominate the skyline of Mgahinga. They’re part of the Virunga Mountains and the dense forests are one of few remaining places where you can see mountain gorilla in the wild. Gorilla tracking with a local Batwa guide is the best way to spot a troop of gorilla or golden monkey, observing as the rare animals eat, play, groom and meander through this delicate ecosystem.
Before Mgahinga became a national park, it was home to Batwa hunter-gatherers. Trekking with a member of this community is a special opportunity to learn about Batwa culture and their relationship with nature, which includes sacred caves and medicinal plants. Mgahinga is one of our favourite places in Uganda for wildlife experiences and cultural encounters alike.
