Kafue

Established in 1950, Kafue National Park is Zambia’s oldest. It’s also the largest, spanning an area that is roughly the same size as the state of Massachusetts. Established in 1950, Kafue National Park is Zambia’s oldest. It’s also the largest, spanning an area that is roughly the same size as the state of Massachusetts.
Why Kafue?
Kafue has more than 150 species of mammal and is particularly good for viewing big cats and a variety of antelope. With so much ground to cover, it’s important to be strategic, and the best areas for a safari in Kafue are near its namesake river and in the remote Busanga Plains.

Despite its immense size, Kafue National Park has just a handful of exclusive lodges. Open-vehicle game drives are a must for viewing lion, leopard and cheetah, but don’t overlook a boating safari on the Kafue River. Spotting elephants from the water, watching kingfishers and fish eagles while manoeuvring around territorial hippo makes for a memorable afternoon.
  • Vast parklands surround the Kafue River.
  • Particularly good for antelope and big cats.
  • African wild dog can also be spotted.
  • Dry season is ideal for safari.
  • Busanga Plains are excellent for herds of large game.
  • Fly in by bush plane and connect easily to other parks.
