While there are several lodge choice on the Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, Garden Lodge is our favourite for families. The 11 freestanding suites operate as mini-villas for extra space and privacy between you and your neighbours. Equally spacious interiors are simply stylish and the panoramic windows fill the space with light. The vistas outside are stunning and you’ll have your own private deck from which to enjoy them. You’ll enjoy sumptuous, organic meals and award-winning wines in the restaurant — a culinary connection to the soul of South Africa.

The Grootbos Private Nature Reserve was founded in 1994 by the Lutzeyer family. Starting off as a humble bed and breakfast, it has developed into a world-renowned bastion of luxury on South Africa’s Garden Route. This is a nature lover’s dream. There are over 800 species of plant, 118 bird species, 29 mammals and 21 amphibians. The 1,000-year old Milkwood tree grove is a peaceful sanctuary. Exploring is a lesson in bio-diversity and your guide will passionately show you how everything coexists in harmony.

There’s no fear of boredom at Grootbos. The 2,500 hectare reserve combines its passion for the environment with a number of ways to explore. Set out on horseback or bikes to explore the coastal meadows. A leisurely 4x4 botanical safari is the best way to learn about the reserve. Off shore, embark on marine safaris and watch dolphin pods leaping in the wake and gentle southern right whales surfacing for air. Amp up the adrenaline and try cage diving with great whites! It doesn’t end there. Enjoy a sunset river cruise, take walks and hikes, join guides for bird watching, learn about beekeeping and in between all that, treat yourself to spa treatments.
