Kalahari Plains Camp is a simple yet comfortable camp constructed along traditional lines. Accommodation is in 10 spacious, walk in tents erected on wooden platforms, each with a private deck and view over the surrounding plains. You can climb the stairs to an upper platform, and sleep out there beneath the stars. It’s a favourite activity for kids of all ages, and a romantic way for a couple to spend the night, too.
The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is the largest game reserve in the world, and for many years it was closed to the public. This is why it is known for being one of Africa’s last true wild areas. Kalahari Plains Camp was one of the very first properties to open here, so it occupies a prime location close to Deception Valley, and many of the activities on offer are centred on this magical pan and the undulating dunes close by. You will find that animals and birds come right up to the camp, so you never have to go far for sightings.
Each comfortable canvas tent is set upon a wooden platform, and has roll up windows and sides so you can choose how close you want to feel to the great outdoors. It is inside the main tent that you will find your en-suite bathroom with its solar powered walk in shower. The twin and double beds are cosy, but the real thrill comes when you go up the staircase onto the platform above the tent. Here, with panoramic views of bush and the wildlife within it, you can sleep outside.
The appeal of the star beds at Kalahari Plains Camp is that it combines both wilderness and comfort. Looking at the stars - crystal clear and glittering in the absence of any light pollution - you will feel humbled by the scale of the universe. The calling of a bird or even a lion will be the only reminder that you are not an astronaut floating through the galaxy but rather here in the Central Kalahari. Comfort comes in the form of the facilities on hand. Your private bathroom, as aforementioned, is just below, and the camp’s dining room, pool, lounge, and other shared areas are only moments away.
