We all began our lives cocooned in the waters of the womb. No wonder then that even as adults that we feel such a sense of calm when we sit beside the sea or swim. Manta Resort has taken it one stage further however, and created an extraordinary underwater room anchored to the ocean floor. Split between three levels, you can climb onto the roof to soak up the rays of the sun, chill out at water level and dangle your feet in the ocean, or descend into another world. Here, you’ll find a bedroom with a king-size bed, and all four walls are made of glass. It’s as if you are inside a reverse fish tank: the shoals come right up to the glass. By night, the spotlights attract octopus, squid, and Spanish dancers, all of which attach themselves to the panes of glass.
Back on dry land, you can also check in to one of Manta Resort’s seafront villas. These spacious, open-plan buildings blend traditional Pemban decor with contemporary comforts. The ‘Evening Breeze’ cooling system ensures the villas are always at a pleasant temperature, even on muggy nights, and as the sides of the villas are open, you will also feel the natural ocean breeze. Guests share use of the two-tiered swimming pool, the beach lounge, bar and tranquil spa. All spa treatments - from deep tissue massage to pampering facials - are included in your room rate, so there’s no excuse not to indulge!
You will likely want to take all your meals with an ocean view, starting with breakfast in the lounge. There is, however, no need to eat always in one place. Why not move down to the beach for lunch, then back to the restaurant for dinner? With all the activities on offer at Manta Resort, you will definitely build up an appetite. Pemba Island offers world class diving, with average water temperatures of 26 Celsius and visibility down to 40m nearly every day. You can also snorkel on the coral reef, try deep-sea fishing, and explore the rocky coves around the island on a kayak safari.
