The award winning Mombo Camp is the flagship property of Wilderness Safaris. The Mombo Concession is at one end of Chief’s Island, which is both stunningly beautiful and boasts one of the highest concentrations of wildlife anywhere in Africa. Palm trees fringe the camp and the floodplains are dotted with water lilies, making this really the most idyllic of settings. Wildlife viewing will begin the moment you get up in the morning - you may not even need to leave your tent - and continues all the way through the day until dusk. Its location is known as 'the place of plenty', which is certainly justified.
Mombo Camp was first built almost 30 years ago, but it has recently been completely reconstructed to bring it up to date and to meet the demands of the most discerning modern travellers. There are nine large tented suites, including a family room, each of which is raised on top of a platform to give a commanding view of the floodplain. Your tent will include separate sleeping and living areas; an en-suite bathroom with a copper bathtub, indoor and outdoor showers; and an incredibly comfortable king-size bed dressed in the finest of linens. You will have a private plunge pool out on the deck, plus an extensive wooden veranda.
There are so many ways to experience the wilderness from Mombo Camp that you’ll struggle to do them all during your stay. The early morning game drives are a must, however, as are the rhino conservation talks. You can photograph shy animals and birds from the secluded, purpose-built hide, and learn about the vital work being undertaken by the Okavango Large Herbivore Ecology Project and the Botswana Lion Genetics Study. When it comes to down time, the camp has a gym and also the option of in-room massage.
