Oliver’s Camp

The July and August school holidays coincide with Tanzania’s dry season. If you’re planning family travel to Tanzania at this time, then we’re sure to include a stay in Tarangire. Animals from across the country gather en masse to the permanent water sources here and there’s no better place to stay in the thick of the action than Oliver’s Camp.

Oliver’s Camp is nestled in the remote southern section of Tarangire National Park. There are only ten tented suites here, enveloping you in the nostalgic atmosphere of colonial exploration. The family tent sleeps four, with a comfy king-size bed and two twins. Whenever the weather is nice, you’ll enjoy your meals al fresco under the African sun. Each week the chefs prepare a barbecue, bringing everyone together for a fun-filled evening of delicious grilled meats. The decor is luxurious, but authentic, swathed in earth tones to match the rugged landscape beyond your veranda.

Each morning you’ll wake to fresh brewed hot drinks and pressed juices on your deck before joining your guide for a game drive or walk. Game viewing activities are taken early morning or late afternoon when animals are most active. For families, we can arrange a private vehicle for freedom to explore at your own pace. You might choose to enjoy your breakfast of bacon and eggs in the bush, with plains game ambling past. Sure to be a highlight for any age is a balloon safari, floating with the birds at dawn as the sun bathes the floodplains in its golden rays.

During the dry season, the permanent waters of the Tarangire River draw huge herds from across the country. Antelope, zebra, buffalo and elephant gather in hundreds and thousands around these life-giving waters. From August to October, this national park has a higher concentration of mammals than anywhere else in the country! Tarangire is also renowned for some of its more curious creatures, not commonly found in other parts of northern Tanzania. Packs of wild dog, stoic kudu, oryx with their sabre-like horns and the peculiar gerenuk, with their long necks to name a few.
