Natural Selection’s star beds are in Botswana’s extraordinary Khwai Private Reserve, a community run concession famed for the richness of its wildlife and the exclusive experience you will have when you choose to safari here. It is a lush, green place even in the dry season, and the sky beds are set above a year round watering hole. In the middle of the night you might well be woken by the sound of snorting and snuffling. The noise does not necessarily emanate from your bedfellow: it might well be the wild dog, hyena, or elephant coming down to the water to drink!
The simple sky bed site is accessed via Natural Selection’s luxurious Sable Alley camp, which opened in 2017. It is a gorgeous drive through the Khwai Private Reserve, and you will see huge numbers of animals - elephant, giraffe, and wildebeest amongst them - along the way. The sky bed is no ordinary camp, and no ordinary sky bed for that matter, either! Each sky bed is actually a three level platform, positioned to make the most of its views of the plain. Your eyes will be glued much of the time to the sky, first for the sunset and then for the stars, but if you do look down then there is a strong chance that you will see animals wandering about beneath you.
Each tier of the star bed platform has a different function. You enter at the ground floor level and climb to the first storey to access your dressing area and a simple bathroom with a flushing toilet. You might be in the heart of the bush, miles from anywhere, but you don’t have to make sacrifices on that front. The top level of the platform is where you will sleep. The cherry on the cake is that you will have a four poster bed made with high quality white linens and topped with a fluffy feather duvet. You can lie back, cosy and completely relaxed, as you survey the sky and pick out the individual constellations, all of which are visible in amazing detail in the clear Botswana sky.
