5 reasons you should consider Kenya in the Green season

Kenya’s green season is perhaps the country’s best-kept secret. Travel during April and May, when refreshing rains grace the plains in the late afternoon, and you’re in for a special safari experience where you’ll feel like you have the wilderness all to yourself.
Yes, there may be some rain, but it’s not the endless days of dreary drizzle we’re used to. Instead, think short but heavy downpours accompanied by lush green grasses, incredible wildlife sightings with far fewer other humans around, dramatic skies and exceptional photo opportunities. What's more, the cost of a trip during this time is considerably lower than in peak season, offering you excellent value for money.

Have the Kenyan wilderness to yourself

Feet on the ground of the famous Masai Mara, seemingly never-ending vistas in every direction and not another (human!) soul in sight. It’s a special feeling, one that we know well and are passionate about helping others experience. On every trip we arrange, we do our utmost to make sure each of our clients feels like they have the wilderness to themselves. On a safari in the green season, this feeling is amplified and you’ll feel like you’re the only person to ever have set foot there!

A photographer’s dream

The Kenyan skies are extraordinary all year round but the green season sees dramatic skies like no other time of year. It’s an incredibly atmospheric time to be in Kenya and makes for some fantastic photos. Dark grey clouds dominate the skies, enormous and imposing before the much-needed rains fall. At home, we might consider rain to be limiting, but here it revives and rejuvenates the land and grasses after a long dry season. The verdant grasslands are a joy to experience first-hand and they, too, make for great photos. After the rain shower, the sun returns and it’s back to bright blue skies and sunshine.

Abundant wildlife encounters

With the rain comes fresh energy and new life, for both the landscape and the animals, plus you can still enjoy great Big Five game viewing. Many are rearing their offspring over April and May, so it’s a good time to spot mothers with their young. With the grasses growing longer, the big cats often make their way to the tree branches or perch on top of rocks in order to survey their surroundings in search of prey, giving you lots of opportunities to stop and observe them. If you’re a keen birder, this is an excellent time to be in Laikipia, with countless migratory species appearing.

More value for money

There are considerable savings to be made on a safari in the green season. In comparison with a safari in August, which is the high season, you can expect to save anywhere between 30 and 50%. Combine these savings with the incredible natural beauty that you’ll be witness to, great wildlife sightings and the photos you’ll return with, and we’re sure you’ll agree that these trips are incredible value for money.

The most sustainable time to travel

Travelling gives us an authentic insight into the lives and traditions of others that we might not have known about before. For us, travelling is just as much about the people we meet as it is about the landscapes and wildlife. We feel strongly that it is our duty to help to support the local communities in the areas in which we take our holidays, and we know that our clients feel this way too. For many, there is a huge imbalance in income throughout the year according to traditional travel seasons and so by choosing to travel in the green season, when fewer others do, you help to lessen this imbalance.
