5 reasons to choose an African safari for your multigenerational holiday

Are you celebrating a big birthday, a retirement or special anniversary? Maybe you have a plan to take your whole family, children and grandchildren on a trip that will delight and inspire them. Any reason will do!
A superb safari has all the ingredients for a trip of a lifetime for each generation. There is amazing accommodation, beauty and adventures to share. Expert guides will take you to see elephant and big cats in their natural habitat. Your grandchildren will encounter wildlife, places and cultures for real that they have seen on Discovery channels.

We’ve been arranging the finest family safaris for 32 years and know the best guides and extraordinary lodges in the secret wild places of Africa.

Every family is unique, so we will create your multigeneration safari from a blank canvas. We start with your interests, listen to your dreams and work with you to fill the canvas with a trip that children and adults will eagerly look forward to. And one that they will remember and treasure in their hearts forever.

The wild beauty of Africa has inspired the design of truly amazing accommodation. An exquisite lodge raised on stilts above the pristine Okavango Delta. A luxurious family villa atop an ancient ridge with views of the wild savannahs. An extraordinary tented camp where you can watch the Zambezi roll by from the comfort of a Victorian bath.

We select the finest accommodation, often on private reserves. These exclusive lodges take between eight and twenty people at one time so your family may take the entire place.

The best lodges usually have the best guides. Friendly, engaging people who adore their work. Through long experience they understand animal behaviour and know the rivers and plains intimately.

As well as the big animals that you expect to see like elephant and lion there are many other amazing creatures to enjoy. Playful families of baboons, soaring eagles, furtive cheetah, curious giraffe — there is so much to discover.

The delight on your grandchildren’s faces as they see their first leopard in the wild will be a sight to treasure. And there are so many ways to encounter the wildlife. You can take a boat on the Zambezi or the teenagers can try a canoe safari. You can track giraffe on foot and learn the secrets of bushcraft on a fascinating walk.

We can arrange horseback safaris and walking with Maasai warriors and their camels in the Great Rift Valley. Open vehicles, quadbikes, balloons and biplanes. You name it, we can arrange it. Always in the company of the finest guides.

When we send your itinerary we will explain how each safari lodge is helping to protect and conserve its environment. Many work closely with neighbouring tribal groups to protect against poachers and encourage local people to see wild animals as a resource, not a threat.

Some safari lodges have worked for decades to save endangered species and transform overgrazed land into thriving wildlife reserves. By paying to visit these places you are helping save these fragile places and their wildlife. We also fully offset your carbon footprint.

We make travel as efficient as possible. We have experienced people to welcome and shepherd you through large airports. Our safaris usually include several contrasting locations and many of the lodges have their own landing strips.

As a multigeneration family, your group size will make chartering planes a cost effective, enjoyable and effective way of moving from place to place. We can also use chartered planes to avoid the need to overnight in a city.

The Hunter family got in touch with us recently to tell us all about their favourite family holiday to Africa. When they called us to enquire, they explained that they wanted an unforgettable family adventure out in the wilds of Africa. We chose Chongwe River House in Zambia's Lower Zambezi where the family could enjoy varied activities, see lots of wildlife and indulge on their holiday. Nicole Hunter wrote a lovely piece on her blog, Go Far Grow Close, where she shared her experience in depth and which we hope you will enjoy reading a snippet of below.

Planning your first family safari? We understand that you might be wondering about malaria. Our safari experts are here to reassure you that your family can enjoy a safari without concern.

Many of Africa’s best safari regions are low to very low risk of malaria, particularly if you travel during the summer holidays. If you would prefer to visit malaria-free safari reserves, then South Africa has many malaria-free regions that offer excellent Big Five safaris.
