Although well-travelled, it was our first experience of Africa and it was brilliant seeing our wish list realised with all the moving parts in the right order. Used to unpredictable happenings in the Caribbean, the efficiency was a revelation.

Highlights were Three Tree Hill Lodge in the shadow of Spionkop, our first sighting of cheetahs near Chief’s Camp in Botswana and our guided tour of Soweto - very emotional to be in the birthplace of South African democracy.

In July 2007 and 2009 we returned to find Botswana in winter, even more beguiling due in no small part to Little Kwara, our billet on both trips: Sundowners at the hippo pool; paddling a mokoro (the only sound the water running under the hull); seeing lions tentatively wading through the floods like so many pussy cats and watching the sunrise over breakfast as the full moon set over the previous night’s boma.

But then we went to Namibia. Wild, spiritual…and empty. Our guide Tim was exceptional. So many stunning memories: dawn at Sossusvlei; sleeping under the cold stars on the roof at Kulala Desert Lodge; a kamikaze flight over the Skeleton Coast; Hobatere with romance of Kenya.

And the high point - Okaukuejo - when a night time trip to the loo meant hours gazing out over the floodlit waterhole frequented by forty elephants, giraffes (and a cheeky jackal) a stone’s throw away.

Africa Exclusive opened our eyes to a continent, to really consultative and knowledgeable planning and pain free, varied travel. I have been to Africa now on almost a dozen occasions and, as I write this, I can still hear the Soweto township choir under a rising moon in Stellenbosch.
