HISTORY AND CULTURE

Centuries of tribal movement, the arrival of the north European boers, and the coming of the British Empire set the scene for South Africa’s unique cultural tapestry. Cecil Rhodes, Sir Winston Churchill, Nelson Mandela and even Mahatma Gandhi have played their parts, and on your family holiday you can find out more visiting Robben Island, Isandlwana and Rorke’s Drift. The energetic story of this vibrant Rainbow Nation continues.

Before you go, take time out to read James Mitchener’s book 'Covenant' which takes you from pre-history, following generations of families as South Africa’s history unfolds around them. Your family holiday might take you from Cape Town by rail on the Blue Train or Rovos following the course of the 'Great Trek' of boer farmers seeking to escape the colonial British for a new homeland. We can arrange a historian guide who will bring history alive through the characters as you explore Pretoria and the goldfields.

Another top historian guide will be with you as your family stands on the eerie Isandlwana battlefield where the Welsh Guards were massacred by thousands of Zulu warriors – each little pile of white stones beneath the hill showing where a group of soldiers fought to the last. A few escaped across the river to warn the outpost at Rorke’s Drift, which led by Michael Caine later holding out in one of the most heroic episodes of the British Empire!

These battle sites are in KwaZulu Natal which is at its best from April to October. Less well known than the Cape and the Kruger, it’s a superb place to discover Zulu culture and one where the Drakensberg mountains, a spectacular shoreline, and wildlife reserves offer the ingredients for exciting family adventures.
