FOLLOW THE MIGRATION

The epic migration of two million wildebeest, zebra and gazelle makes its way across almost the entire Serengeti in the course of a year. Sometimes you find yourself surrounded by herds of thousands or you see endless “lines” covering the horizon as the animals move continually in search of fresh grasses. Zebra often go first as their mouths are adapted to the longer grasses, followed by wildebeest and Thomson’s gazelle.
From January to March the herds gather around the short grass plains and ancient volcanic masses in the southern Serengeti. In a few hectic weeks 600,000 wildebeest calves are born – up and running in moments. The rains in April prompt movement northwest into the western Serengeti “corridor”. Here the scenery changes to include forests and rivers like the Grumeti where fearsome crocodiles lie in wait.
July to October sees the migration in the northern Serengeti with part crossing into Kenya’s Masai Mara. The scenery here is majestic – undulating open plains, flat topped acacia trees and gnarled rocky kopjes; favourite watching points for the cats. We can arrange for you to stay at superb Lamai Lodge, near the Mara River where you enjoy magnificent sightings of the massed herds hesitating and drawing back before plunging into the waters. In the closing months of the year the herds are on the move again returning southwards past the Gol Mountains across undulating grassland.
