Special Safaris for Children

Discovering Kenya together on a luxury family safari is a unique bonding experience which adults and children will adore. You will create travel memories to be treasured for years. In fact, we sometimes receive invitations to arrange a family safari from parents who have fond memories of their first African experience with us as children. There are also opportunities for the children to become Maasai warriors or junior rangers and enjoy their own specially-adapted safaris.

Learning to make and shoot a bow and arrow and how to throw a spear are fundamental parts of a Maasai boy’s education. Warriors from the local community will train your children in these arts and they’ll have great fun together. They will find out what your children are interested in and teach them dances, face decoration, crafting and songs.

In Kenya, bushcraft is more than an interest! For centuries it has been the key to survival in the wilds. Samburu and Maasai trackers will delight in taking your children around the perimeter of the camp, showing them the medicinal use of plants and herbs. They’ll discover how to find and use a “bush toothbrush” and how to find life-saving moisture in vegetation. Your children will be introduced to the art of tracking and will discover the relationship between animals, insects and plants which balance the ecology.

Camels are a traditional beast of burden for nomadic tribal people. We can arrange for your family to set off on an unforgettable walking safari with Samburu people and their camels. You’ll pass at a leisurely pace through volcanic landscape and along dry riverbeds called “luggas”. Chat with your guides, learning their way of life as the landscapes unfold before you. You can do this for a day, or longer if you like, staying overnight in exciting mobile camps.
