A Riverboat with Real Community Roots
If you’ve spent time searching for wildlife in its own habitat, you’ll know that part of the reward lies in the challenge. Animals are wary; the best sightings demand expertise and the right means of getting deep into their territory. That’s the intrepid role of a boat like Belle Amazon.

Now contrast that with the journey’s other dimension: its human communities. Proudly separate from much of modern society, the people on the banks still welcome you in; showing you their daily routines, the food they cherish, the crafts they make, the places they swim and gather. Human connection, open and unforced. Every bit as rewarding as the wildlife.

Location

Belle Amazon operates from the small Brazilian port of Alter do Chão, set on the Tapajós River, just upstream from its meeting with the Amazon at Santarém and close to where the Arapiuns flows in. Here, three rivers of strikingly different colours – pale, silt‑rich Amazon; crystal‑green Tapajós; and the deep, peaty black Arapiuns – create a mosaic of ecosystems, each revealing a different facet of the world’s most vital rainforest.

In high‑water months, the rivers swell to their grandest scale and the flooded forests allow effortless wildlife viewing straight from the deck. During low‑water season, skiff excursions and forest walks are complemented by long, sun‑drenched hours on wide sandy beaches. Whatever the time of year, wildlife is only part of the story – riverside communities are equally integral, offering insight into life lived along these extraordinary waterways.

Accommodation

The atmosphere at mealtimes aboard Belle Amazon says everything about the style of the journey. Guests gather around a large, nautical table for a communal feast, passing plates of home‑style Brazilian dishes made from the seasonal produce of riverside villages. There is laughter, the swapping of stories from the day’s sightings, and the pleasant ache of limbs tired from swimming and paddleboarding.

It’s an unfussy, convivial scene – showing that you’re enjoying a river expedition rather than a luxury cruise – yet comfortable and perfectly attuned to the exploratory spirit of life on the three contrasting rivers.
Belle Amazon hosts up to 16 guests in eight air‑conditioned cabins, each with a neat, ship‑shape ensuite bathroom. The design is simple and practical, with clean lines and a classic river‑boat feel. A master suite occupies pride of place in the bow, its panoramic windows framing the waterways ahead. Four cabins include a single bunk for added flexibility, making the vessel ideal for families or mixed groups.

Communal life flows between the dining room and the living room, which features a bar and a small balcony for watching river life drift by. Outside, stern deck chairs invite idling in the breeze, while the sundeck above offers open space for sunbathing, stargazing and taking in the Amazon from on high.

Why We Include Belle Amazon in Our Journeys

The story behind Belle Amazon is one that resonates deeply with us. Its founder – a local guide determined to support riverside communities and offer visitors a more meaningful connection to the region – realised that lodge‑based travel could never match the insight gained by exploring the waterways themselves. The result is a journey that reveals not only the Amazon’s wildlife, but the daily rhythms of the people who call these rivers home.

It’s also a wonderfully complementary experience to upstream regions like Peru where the forests sit closer. Here in Brazil, the landscapes offer a different perspective on the Amazon as a whole.

Choice and Flexibility

16‑berth Belle Amazon is the mid‑size vessel in Kaiara’s three‑boat fleet. Its larger sister, Amazon Dolphin, accommodates 22 guests, while the charming Tupaiu takes just ten.

Tupaiu is ideal for exclusive‑use journeys for families or groups of friends, with highly flexible itineraries tailored to specific interests. That makes it perfect for those wanting a bespoke, deeply personal exploration of the Tapajós and Arapiuns waterways.

Conservation
Conservation
Kaiara, the parent company of Belle Amazon, operates river journeys that follow strict low impact navigation rules on the Tapajós and Arapiuns, avoiding sensitive areas and supporting responsible wildlife viewing. By operating on existing river routes rather than building new lodge infrastructure, they help reduce pressure on surrounding forest habitats.
Community
Community
Kaiara is a locally founded and locally staffed company, ensuring tourism revenue stays within riverside communities. Their itineraries include community led experiences, visits to small producers and opportunities to purchase locally made crafts, supporting livelihoods along the Tapajós and Arapiuns.
Environment
Environment
Operating entirely on the rivers, Belle Amazon and Tupaiu minimise land based footprint and rely on small group travel with limited passenger numbers. Waste is managed on board and plastic use is reduced wherever possible, aligning with Kaiara’s commitment to responsible, small scale Amazon tourism.
