Location

Occupying a beautiful site at the crest of a forested hill within the 30,000-hectare Ongava private game reserve, Little Ongava looks out across a vista of prime wildlife habitat. Once, this was depleted and sterile farmland, but it’s now a haven for Africa’s most iconic species, including black and white rhino. What’s more, it borders world-famous Etosha National Park, so the safari possibilities are endless. With an adjacent airstrip, it’s also ideal for those who are having multi-centre journeys where speed and comfort are priorities.

Accommodation

Little Ongava features just three exquisitely designed lofted thatch-roofed villas, each harmoniously blending rustic charm with contemporary indulgence. These villas are crafted to merge seamlessly with the natural surroundings, with open-plan living areas featuring floor-to-ceiling glass facades that invite the ever-changing hues of the African bush indoors.

From the spacious sitting room, complete with a fireplace for cosy evenings, there’s access to a private viewing deck with an indulgent half-moon infinity pool. What’s more, there’s a walkway leading to a secluded, thatched gazebo with an even more desirable 180-degree outlook over the plain below. It’s a perfect spot for sundowners.
This is the kind of place where personal choice and flexibility come high on the agenda. Do you want the butler to run a deep bath ready for your return from a dusty day out? Just ask, and you’ll be slipping into bubbles in front of enormous windows before you know it. Or perhaps opt for a shower: there’s an outdoor one in addition to the indoor version.

As for eating arrangements, you could opt for a communal experience with the other two suites or enjoy the peace of private dining. Each suite comes with its own dedicated 4x4 vehicle, so even daily excursions are ultimately flexible.

Experiences

Within the private Ongava reserve, conservationists estimate that there are 300 species of mammals, over 340 bird species, and an abundance of amphibians, reptiles, and insect life. It’s a prime safari destination, even without adjacent Etosha National Park.

  • Go out on early morning or late afternoon game drives. Or opt for a night excursion. Stay local, or head further afield. The choice is yours because of your dedicated vehicle.
  • Have the thrill of a walking safari learning about the plants and smaller creatures that are just as important in the web of life.
  • Between Ongava Reserve and Etosha, you’ll be spotting all the iconic animal species that every safari should reveal. It’s rare to be able to see both black and white rhinos in one area.
  • Enjoy a fascinating outing to the Ongava Research Centre, an independent institution in a magnificent building attached to Andersson's Lodge.
  • Head down to the ‘Viewing Blind’, a low-profile hide adjacent to the nearby waterhole. This is one of the most intimate ways of seeing wildlife close up and getting amazing photographs.
