Location

Nestled on ice-free rock amidst the freshwater lakes of the intriguing plateau of the Schirmacher Oasis, Whichaway Camp is situated in one of Antarctica's most awe-inspiring locations. The camp's unique setting provides easy access to both dramatic ice formations and the vast wilderness of the Antarctic interior within the Queen Maud Land sector.

With its proximity to Atka Bay, guests are ideally positioned to witness one of nature’s greatest spectacles: the Emperor Penguin colony. This location, where the polar desert of the Antarctic ice sheet meets the maritime world of the Novolazarevskaya Nivl Ice Shelf, offers an immersive Antarctic experience, blending exploration with unparalleled comfort.

Whichaway is the sister camp to White Desert’s other awesome Antarctic location, Echo Camp.

Accommodation

White Desert’s original luxury camp in Antarctica, Whichaway is home to six unique Polar Pods. The ultra-durable pods have been modified from their original wind-resistant dome shapes to incorporate the significant perk of the world’s most remote conservatories. Needless to say, you couldn’t wish for a more amazing view to go with your morning coffee.

Each pod features a writing desk, wash area, and toilet, with everything designed to perfection to offer both convenience and privacy. The interiors are adorned with rich textures and warm tones, creating a cosy and inviting atmosphere that reflects the camp’s blend of modern luxury and classic Antarctic exploration.
In addition to the Polar Pods, Whichaway Camp offers exceptional dining experiences. Guests can enjoy meals prepared by an award-winning chef, who serves a variety of international dishes made with fresh, high-quality ingredients. The dining area, with its panoramic views of the surrounding icy landscape, provides the perfect setting to savour these culinary delights.

The camp also includes communal spaces where guests can relax and socialise, including a well-stocked bar and comfortable lounges. Somewhat unbelievably, though true, the camp also features a sauna and a futuristic wellness dome: a perfect place for yoga in an elemental landscape.

Activities & Experiences

Whichaway Camp’s location not only provides access to incredible experiences in its immediate surroundings – above, beside, and even below the ice – but also links logistically to Atka Bay, Wolf’s Fang Runway, Echo Camp and even the South Pole itself.

  • Explore the polar wilderness on guided treks across the breathtaking Antarctic landscape. Discover giant ice formations, venture into ice tunnels, and experience the strange proglacial environment that will shatter your idea of an oasis.
  • For those after thrills, you can zip-line over dramatic ice formations, abseil down glacial cliffs and scale nearby peaks. Needless to say, such activities are always in the company of certified mountain guides and polar explorers.
  • While you may have seen a spectacle like Atka Bay on television, there’s nothing like visiting a place where up to 28,000 emperor penguins congregate and raise their chicks. This incredible site is accessed by a flight from Whichaway Camp.
  • One of the world’s ultimate locations is also accessible by a flight from Whichaway: the geographical South Pole. Remotely extreme in its isolation and latitude, there’s no place on the planet that can match its unique appeal.
  • Wind-down activities in the camp take this place to beyond extraordinary. Gourmet food and exceptional wine – even out on the ice – are just the start.
  • You may find it hard to believe that you can have a sauna here or meditate in a glass dome looking towards looming ice cliffs, then settle down to a relaxed and informative evening with a polar scientist.

Antarctica: What to Expect from a Polar Cruise

Nothing can really prepare you for an expedition in the white continent. It really is a destination quite unlike any other. It’s not just the cold of the poles, or the brightness of the sun reflecting off the snow and ice. Perhaps it’s the unexpected silence, the apparent emptiness, and the curious feeling of being so far from signs of human habitation. Finding such peace is rare.
