Location

Ongava provides the quintessential Namibian safari experience. For over 30 years, what was former cattle ranches has been converted into a prolific and protected wildlife destination, renowned for its conversation initiatives and ground-breaking research.

The reserve is now home to several lion prides, as well as elephants, giraffe, and several species of antelope including the rare black-faced impala. Perhaps the most important species here, and an attraction for all visitors, are black and white rhino, after one of the most successful relocation and reintroduction projects in Africa.

The rhino population is not only protected but growing and more understood, with major genetics studies revealing fascinating information about how these creates live, adapt and thrive.

Accommodation

Catering for the lucky few, Anderssons provides just eight luxury suites, centred around the wildlife attraction of an excellent waterhole. Each suite has large sliding glass and screened doors opening onto a spacious wraparound veranda for rewarding views of the near-constant parade of sipping wildlife. Discreet electric fencing means that animals can come remarkably close while you remain in safety. Indeed, the whole cluster of suites and communal buildings is fenced so that you can wander the paths of the whole complex freely: a great bonus for groups with children.
The finishing standard and the array of comforts in the suites are exceptionally high. They’re air-conditioned sanctuaries where you can enjoy a powerful shower in a marble bathroom and collapse into an enormous bed. What’s more, they’re inspirational spaces, blending stone, wood and glass with the textures, colours and artefacts of Namibia into a modern yet comforting whole.

Brick pathways link the suites to the communal facilities, which include an elegant bar and lounge, the dining area, a fire pit, large decks facing the waterhole, and another lounge where educational presentations are given. With manicured lawns surrounding it, the camp’s infinity pool is a popular space for lounging and cooling off. It attracted elephants so much that a freshwater trough was installed adjacent to it, giving bathers close but not too-close encounters nowadays.

Experiences

Named after Charles Andersson, an early explorer of the Etosha Pan, this lodge is a fitting legacy to a man who has inspired conservation and discovery over the generations since. Etosha is just one attraction here, though, for there are distinct opportunities also available in the Ongava private reserve.

  • Guests benefit from the exceptional game viewing in Etosha, but Ongava offers the additional thrills of walking safaris, rhino approaches and night drives, which aren’t available in the national park.
  • The camp has an excellent sunken hide by the waterhole. Accessed by tunnel, it puts you right at ground level, giving exceptional viewing and photographic possibilities.
  • You don’t even have to move from your bed to watch the waterhole. Turn on the TV, and you’ll find a channel with a live stream camera showing images of what’s currently visiting.
  • Visit the Ongava Research Centre and museum to learn from the displays and direct from conservationists about the ground-breaking research being carried out in the reserve. The centre has an auditorium and sky deck.
  • Researchers often give half-hour talks in the presentation area of the lodge, so a stay at Anderssons always comes with easy opportunities for education.
  • With an airstrip nearby, this is a great place to enjoy dramatic views of the landscape on a flying safari.

Families

Two of the suites are spaced more closely than the others, allowing for larger groups, including families. The fenced nature of the site means that it is a relatively safe environment, though we would still advise that children be supervised. The staff are flexible and good with families, and there’s the significant draw of the fascinating discovery centre for those who have kids with minds like sponges. There’s so much to learn about the Namibian bush, and this is an inspiring place to satisfy enquiring minds.
