Namibia. The scene of your next adventure.
If you’re graduating from the African countries on the beaten path, or if you want to plunge straight into a unique adventure, then Namibia is for you. Home to the world’s oldest desert, the classic image of Namibia is of enormous dunes towering over the rolling mist of remote Skeleton Coast beaches, but there’s so much more to this diverse, safe and sparsely populated country. You won’t miss out on stunning wildlife in locations such as Etosha and the Caprivi Strip, and every other awesome Namibian environment comes with its own extra dimension.

Namibia is far from being the ‘typical’ safari destination, even though it covers that base too: it is a place to find serenity and peace, somewhere to sit under enormous starlit skies, a place to be amazed by the power of elemental forces, and a country that has prioritised low-impact and luxurious ways to share its splendour with the lucky few.

1. Every Angle Covered

Though the distances between the different locations can be long, there is an excellent patchwork of airstrips so you can hop from one camp to the next by light aircraft/private plane, appreciating the scale and majesty of the desert from the air as you fly. You can choose to explore at a more leisurely pace in your own 4×4 with an experienced guide and driver, have the adventure of a self-drive trip, or do a bit of everything. In Namibia, it’s all possible.

We pick from an amazing collection of private lodges and elegant tented camps in epic locations, so your trip could involve staying in Namibia’s least-visited national park at Shipwreck Lodge, sleeping among the boulders at Canyon Lodge, or perching above the Kunene River at Serra Cafema. Possibilities are endless, and there’s every chance that on a visit to Namibia you’ll just discover more to do and more ways to do them next time.

2. Diverse Landscapes

We all have an image of a typical desert, but Namibia will educate you in two ways: firstly, that there is no typical desert, and secondly, that Namibia is more than just dry landscapes. Most famous for the towering dunes of Sossusvlei and the salt pans of Etosha, Namibia is also home to rivers and wetlands, one of the largest canyons on the planet, rugged arid mountain ranges, and the epic spectacle of the Skeleton Coast.

Our expert Journeysmiths will put you right at the heart of every terrain. In wildlife-filled Etosha, you could stay in the luxury tented camp of Onguma, or you could choose the stunning location where the Hoanib River meets the Skeleton Coast with a few nights at the Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp. If you can cope with vertigo, then staying on the rim of the gaping chasm at Fish River Lodge is an unforgettable experience.

3. Activities Galore

An intrepid and enterprising host population provides an array of ways to experience the wonders of Namibia. Many of the remote camps require exciting flights to access them, all the better to see the scale of the terrain, or you could opt for the slower and calmer alternative of floating in a hot air balloon.

Thrill-seekers will love sandboarding down the enormous dunes of Sossusvlei or venturing out on quadbikes, though there’s the more tranquil option of e-bikes at Wolwedans Dunes Lodge. Returning from a trip from a parched desert country, no one will expect you to have drifted down a river past basking crocodiles, but that’s exactly what you can do at Serra Cafema. Everywhere you stay in Namibia, far from sources of light pollution, astronomical activities are on offer every night, and each suite at Little Kulala comes with a sky bed on its roof. Into pre-history? Take a hike from Onduli Ridge to see the UNESCO-listed rock art at Twfelfontein.

4. Unique Wildlife

For the perfect wildlife experience in Namibia, you can’t get much better than Hoanib Valley Camp, a luxurious cluster of tents and joint venture between the local community and the Giraffe Conservation Foundation. Not only can you get an up-close experience of the giraffes, but you’ll go out tracking desert rhino, elephant, oryx and lion. Namibian elephants often dig in dry river channels for water, and you’ll find that they’re often followed by giraffes and baboons, keen for an easy drink. Those drought-adapted species can also be seen at Shipwreck Lodge, with the added advantage of being close to the huge colonies of Cape fur seals. From the decks in the dunes, you’ll see seabirds drawn to the nutrient-rich waters of the cold Benguela Current: the same waters that attract the whales that can be seen from Swakopmund. Not all wildlife in Namibia has to cope with aridity: the camps of the Caprivi Strip in the north, such as Lianshulu Lodge, are places to spot hippo, wildebeest, zebra and waterbuck.

5. A Place for Everyone

We think that Namibia has something for everyone, no matter their age or the size of the group they are travelling with. The common denominator of travellers to Namibia, young or old, group or single, is that they want a safari experience like no other. Travel options, a wide range of activities, and luxuriously intrepid places to stay, offer great flexibility.

It’s perfect for couples seeking romantic seclusion, for families needing to keep the young ones captivated by exotic wildlife and thrilling escapades, and for groups of friends who are keen to bond through shared adventures. It also appeals to solo travellers who desire to be bold while keeping a few creature comforts.

For those venturing to Namibia on their own, we recommend our thoughtfully curated, exclusive small group trip, hosted by award-winning photographer and expert naturalist guide Warren Samuels.

6. Combinations of Possibilities

While Namibia is an unparalleled standalone destination, it’s also a place that can easily be combined with other options. It’s well-connected with its neighbouring countries through excellent airports, and we can arrange for efficient transfers so that, for example, you can be in Windhoek in the morning and yet have close encounters with elephants in Botswana’s Chobe by the afternoon.

How about having the ultimate hydrological contrast between the deafening power of Victoria Falls and the serene silence amid the parched dunes of Namibia? Or you could add some diversity to a Cape Town wine-tasting trip with a quick flight up to Walvis Bay and onwards to the Skeleton Coast. Namibia’s extraordinary panhandle, the Caprivi Strip, thrusts along the borders with Angola and Zambia, just to the north of Botswana’s Okavango Delta, and even comes within 100 metres of touching Zimbabwe. Geographically, Namibia’s location offers all kinds of possibilities.
