Location

In a remote location inland from the supremely isolated Möwe Bay (albeit with the Lentokentta Airstrip), this camp is on the valley edge of the occasionally present Hoanib River. It’s this vital water source, along with coastal fogs, that ensures that there is life here in this parched environment: a landscape of stark, rocky mountains thrusting through the sands and gravels of Namibia’s Kaokoveld Region, the Skeleton Coast National Park and the northern edge of the Palmwag Concession.

Accommodation

Accessible only by light aircraft, Hoanib Camp offers just eight elegantly appointed twin-bedded tents, including a dedicated family suite. Each tent rises gracefully from the landscape, blending canvas and glass so that indoor luxury and the raw beauty of the desert merge. Each tent has an en-suite bathroom and its own private, shaded deck looking out over the dramatic Hoanib River floodplain where two tributaries meet.
Interiors of the tents feature rough textures and patterns of the Hoanib and Himba people, who are also the local source of the basketry, chairs and tables. This is just part of the ethical and environmental ethos of the camp, which sits lightly and sustainably in its setting.

The communal camp area is a contemporary and stylish enclave where an inviting lounge and dining space come together, allowing guests to relax or gather to share stories after a day of adventure. A refreshing plunge pool provides a cooling respite from the aridity of the desert, while evening sessions around an open fire connect guests with the timeless rhythm of this silent and majestic landscape.

Experiences

The parched landscape of this remote region of Namibia may appear to be lifeless, but that is far from the case. Though sparse in numbers, the animals are drawn to places where water can be found.

  • Enjoy sightings of Hartmann’s mountain zebra, giraffe, gemsbok, springbok, kudu, and drought-adapted elephants. Lion, leopard and cheetah are also sometimes seen.
  • Visit the local Giraffe Conservation Foundation. One of the camp's partners, Dr Julian Fennesy, is Africa’s foremost giraffe expert.
  • A short flight to the coast will put you in an environment of seals, shipwreck remains, and the unique stories and history of Möwe Bay.
  • Spend time with fascinating local people from the Himba and Herero tribes, learning about their traditions and the way that they survive in this challenging environment.
  • Take a night drive to see how the desert comes alive with the activity of nocturnal animals. It will also be an opportunity to turn off the lights and revel in the incredible night sky.

Through the wealth of information produced by scientists, Hoanib’s Research Centre, set in camp, continues to help drive Wilderness Safaris’ mission to conserve and restore Africa’s wilderness and wildlife by addressing critical issues such as human-wildlife conflict.
