Location

Cradled by hillslopes at the foot of a valley descending from Yucay’s summit near Huayoccari, Inkaterra Hacienda Urubamba occupies 40 hectares of terraced mountainside sloping gently down to the north bank of the swift-flowing Urubamba River.

Nestled in the Sacred Valley of the Incas between Cusco and Machu Picchu, the property offers sweeping Andean panoramas, a pleasant climate, and proximity to picturesque villages, vibrant artisan communities, and significant archaeological sites.

Guests can immerse themselves in local culture or embark on adventure sports – including hiking, mountain biking, horse riding, and whitewater rafting – while savouring the harmonious fusion of breathtaking scenery and warm, authentic Andean hospitality.

Accommodation

Whether you opt for a room or suite within the main Casa Hacienda or for one of the 24 independent casitas scattered through the lush gardens, you’ll find your abode in the Sacred Valley to be a harmonious blend of modern comfort and design inspired by the area’s rich cultural history. After soaking in your rainfall shower, you’ll be able to curl up in the soft embrace of an alpaca blanket by a woodburning stove.

Apart from the casitas, there are nine superior deluxe rooms, two junior suites, a larger Urubamba Suite, and two ‘Owner’s Quarters’ suites with room for four or six guests. The latter two options are ideal for families, or indeed for anyone craving more space and even better panoramic views from an upper storey.
Architecturally, the hacienda’s low-slung profile and earthy tones harmonise with the landscape, making it feel like an organic extension of the valley itself. That natural and sympathetic theme carries through to the dining experience, which is based around ingredients from the on-site organic farm. Traditional crops like corn, purple potatoes, and quinoa are the basis for a menu that celebrates local flavours and sustainability. You can harvest your own ingredients and then enjoy them crafted into dishes accompanied by macerated pisos and curated wines.

For those in need of afternoon refreshment, the tradition here is to take tea. It’s certainly worth it: the hacienda has its own multi-award-winning black tea. Having benefited from tannins and antioxidants, you can have further health-enhancing experiences at the excellent Mayu Spa.

Experiences

Located near the hub of Urubamba, the ancient sites of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, even Machu Picchu itself, are within striking distance when you stay at this hacienda. Here are some more local ideas:

  • Enjoy a chicha de jora workshop, and you’ll learn to prepare this traditional Andean fermented corn drink through harvesting, grinding, and tasting sessions.
  • Enjoy a traditional Pachamanca lunch where local ingredients are cooked in the ground. You can follow this up with a coca leaf reading by a local shaman and an ancient ritual giving thanks to Mother Earth.
  • Visit the ladies of the Awamaki collective and see first-hand how traditional techniques are being kept alive through the work of one of our charity partners.
  • Take a guided mountain trail walk as the sun sets while discovering Andean astronomy and the mystical transition between day and night. When you arrive back, there’ll be further stargazing on the terrace.
  • Walk the Challa Huasi trail. It translates as ‘house of the viewer’, and the panoramic viewpoints are exceptional. Spot hawks, hummingbirds, and other native bird species along the way.
  • Enjoy a traditional Pachamanca lunch where local ingredients are cooked in the ground. You can follow this up with a coca leaf reading by a local shaman and an ancient ritual giving thanks to Mother Earth.
  • Have a picnic and a paddle in Andean style with a panoramic view of the vivid blue waters of Huaypo Lagoon. Spending time here is great for acclimatisation to the altitude.
