Volcanoes National Park is part of the Virunga Conservation Area, a region of towering conical volcanoes covered in lush afro-montane forests, watered by fast flowing rivers, which flow into beautiful lakes.

The lush slopes of the volcanoes provide an appropriately dramatic natural setting for what is perhaps the most poignant and thrilling wildlife experience to be had anywhere – to see the Mountain Gorilla in its natural habitat.

The national park is also an excellent place for bird watching and for viewing primates and other smaller creatures, and the nature of the wildlife and, in particular, the setting contrasts spectacularly with almost all other safari destinations in East Africa.

The lodge has just 21 exquisite rooms and suites, privately situated in the folds of the hills and each with its own unique view. Built using environmentally friendly designs, materials, and technologies, they are suspended as if floating where gorillas might make their nests. They are furnished to the highest standards sumptuous en-suite bathroom, bedroom with king size bed and a full length veranda.

The spectacular Virunga Suite, Ingagi Suite and Silverback Suite are the epitome of luxury in the region and offer guests even more expansive accommodation with a wonderful lounge areas and larger outdoor spaces.

The central areas of the lodge are equally as stylish. Natural materials have been used inside and out, and the architects and interior designers certainly have an artistic flair. There is a large lounge, bar and dining area with extensive outdoor decks from which you can enjoy the spectacular views.

Gorilla’s Nest prides itself on its food and drink. Meals are freshly prepared using local, seasonal ingredients, and you can opt to dine in the The Nest – the social hub and main restaurant area of the lodge – The Nest Bar is the perfect place to relax, share stories of the days adventures and perhaps try one of the signature cocktails, rose teas or local coffees.

Between exciting activities in the forest such as nature treks, mountain biking and of course trekking for our illustrious relatives after which the lodge is named, you can rejuvenate mind, body and soul in the Spa and Wellness Centre, where expert therapists draw on a blend of modern techniques and ancient African wisdom to offer guests and truly restorative and transformational stay in this unique corner of the world.

Conservation

The permit to view mountain gorillas not only allows the most respectful encounter, with limited numbers, controlled by experts but also contributes to both the local environment and national initiatives.

Community

At Gorilla’s Nest, there is a perfect ecosystem that connects the resort with the local areas of Kinigi and Musanze. Employing largely locally, the camp has largely employed locally, building on a booming tourism industry. Regular visits and donations are made to local schools and guests are also encouraged to purchase Imigongo art from local tradespeople.

Environment

The seasonal dishes crafted in the kitchens are part of a rich eco-conscious cycle. Delicious local coffee benefits from pesticide free growth and the chefs ensure any unused ingredients are returned to Musanze where they are used in fertiliser to grow produce which is then sold back to the Gorilla’s Nest culinary team.
