Location

Onguma Tented Camp sits within the private Onguma Reserve on the eastern edge of Etosha National Park in northern Namibia. In an environment of unfenced Mopane woodlands and open bushland, it overlooks a busy waterhole, giving guests a front-row seat on the daily wildlife spectacle without needing to move a muscle. Of course, it’s also a base for driving and walking safaris, both of which take you into the heart of one of Africa’s premier wild areas. For those needing a fly-in option, or who want aerial excursions, Onguma Reserve has its own airstrip.

Accommodation

There are just seven tents at Onguma Tented Camp, all arranged on decks in an arc around the centre of everyone’s attention: the camp’s waterhole, which attracts thirsty animals from far and wide. Each tent is generously proportioned and outfitted with high-quality furnishings and fittings to create an elegant and indulgent, yet authentically intrepid, safari experience.

The perfect way to relax is to recline in an armchair on the shady deck of your tent. It’s an environment of wood and canvas surrounded by trees and bush, through which the birds flit.
Glance around, and you’ll see more permanence to your habitat, for there’s a curved stone wall around the outdoor shower and similar sturdiness to the luxurious ensuite bathroom with an oversized bathtub. The blend of natural materials adds significantly to the sense of calm.

Beyond the tents, a refined main building, complete with canvas roofing over large deck areas, serves as the camp’s social hub. The stylish lounge is complemented by an elegant dining area, both of which are open-sided for those all-important views towards the waterhole. And just as the animals make a bee-line for their refreshment, the humans here enjoy a soak in the camp’s rim-flow pool, followed by a cool drink or two. If you need heat, there’s even a wood-fired hot tub.

Experiences

Onguma Tented Camp is surrounded by unfenced Mopane woodlands, which means that wildlife is free to roam; and so are guided parties of humans. There’s so much to be seen and discovered on adventures from this excellent safari base.

  • There are two game drives each day. The morning drive tends to be in Etosha National Park, while the evening one – complete with sundowner drinks – is within the Onguma Reserve.
  • Even when you’re relaxing between excursions, the waterhole is an ever-present wildlife magnet. You can see it from your own private deck, or indeed from anywhere in the camp.
  • The camp has a dedicated wildlife hide, known as the Onguma Onkol Hide. Discreet and comfortable, with multiple windows and positioned for a close-up perspective, it’s the perfect place for epic photographs.
  • The woodlands around the camp are great for walking safaris. Your expert guide will show you the landscape and ecosystem details that tend to be missed on vehicle safaris.
  • Birdwatchers love Onguma. Between permanent and migratory birds, there are 300 species to spot., Our favourite is the secretive and strikingly beautiful Yellow-throated Sandgrouse.
  • After a soak in the camp’s hot tub, why not also treat yourself to some massage therapy. It’ll rejuvenate you so you’ll be fully ready for tomorrow morning’s early game drive.

Conservation
Conservation
Onguma funds a successful anti-poaching unit which helps protect all species that reside within the private nature reserve but notably the endangered rhinos. Since their establishment, there has been a dramatic decrease in poaching instances.
Community
Community
Onguma have worked hard to create jobs on a large scale for the local Oshivelo community and their ambition turned into the 500-hectare Oshivelo Farming project. Today the project represents one of the top five vegetable producers in the whole of Namibia.
