Osonjoi Lodge
Location
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area adjoins the Serengeti National Park and includes the Olduvai Gorge, home of the earliest known humans. The crater supports one of the densest populations of lions, along with an estimated 25,000 large animals, including a black rhino.
Accommodation
If quiet places to read a book are your thing, you’ll thank the architects of the communal areas for their thoughtful appreciation of contemplative spaces. There are bold and more sociable areas too, including a lounge and bar, an outdoor viewing deck with a roaring fire, and an indoor heated swimming pool behind enormous windows. Dining at the lodge is a treat, with menus and service honed by Lemala’s decades of experience in East Africa.
Experiences
- Because nearby Lemala Gate is off the beaten track of most tourists, you’ll enjoy exclusive sightings, particularly first thing in the morning.
- Osonjoi has its own private site for lunch down on the crater floor, so you can spend the whole day down there without needing to return to base.
- Take advantage of the indulgent spa suite, hidden in a secluded location amid the trees. The Maasai’s belief in the medicinal and symbolic importance of the Osonjoi Tree, after which the lodge is named, is the inspiration.
- Walk along the crater rim and through the forest in the company of a ranger and a Maasai guide.
- If you arrive by air or take an air excursion from Manyara Airstrip, the view of the towering escarpment is incredible.
The Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater are truly spectacular settings filled with great herds and big cats.
