PUQIO Camp
It’s a two-hour drive north from the airport of Arequipa, passing through the awesome landscape of the Salinas y Auguada Blanca National Reserve.
Once in the Colca Valley, you’ll be staying at an altitude of about 3,600m.
You’ll find that the simplicity of the adobe Pirca rooms does not have to mean a lack of comfort thanks to in-wall heating, a wood burning stove, a sumptuous bathtub (complete with view), a strong shower and a large terrace with commanding views over the epic landscape.
Embracing the spirit of Alexander von Humbolt, however, you may prefer the safari vibe of one of the decadently spacious canvas spaces, complete with indoor and outdoor showers, an outdoor tub on the deck, and bags of accessories oozing safari chic.
We love the bread baked in the outdoor adobe oven and also recommend you try the highly nutritious sancayo cactus fruits on offer. They were apparently the preferred choice of the chasquis messengers of the Inca empire.
While you may be here for the epic sights of the nine-foot wingspans of the Andean condor over the Colca Canyon, you’ll find plenty of other wildlife in the grounds and surrounds of Puqio.
Flitting hummingbirds and calmly grazing alpacas will be an integral part of your view as you sip a cocktail on your spacious deck, or gaze through the windows as you soak in your bath.
- Take a day excursion with Puqio Camp’s herbalist to discover the medicinal and rejuvenating properties of the region’s plants.
- Soak in the hot pools of Coporaque after visiting some of the best textile weavers in the Andes.
- Visit the archaeological site of Uyo Uyo. It’s only 2km away.
- Visit the Tapay area for the best chance of viewing soaring condors. The excursion passes through a sancayo cactus forest.
- Within easy striking distance are the three delightfully authentic settlements of Chivay, Tutti and Sibayo. Savour the traditions and architecture of the local people.
