Botswana Has More Elephants Than Any Country
We estimate that there are around 150,000 elephants in Botswana, which is about a third of Africa’s elephant population. Watch these mighty, socially advanced creatures as they roam the Okavango waterways and the dry savannah plains.

As the dry season advances from June to November, they gather in increasingly large herds at permanent waterholes in Savuti, Kwando and along the Chobe River.

Elephants Of The Okavango Delta
At the height of the annual “flood”, the Okavango Delta extends to about 15,000-square kilometers. That’s ten times bigger than Greater London! The fertile islands of grasses and trees and the abundant water make this the perfect haven for elephants.

Your children will delight in seeing them running into lagoons to swim, play and hose themselves. Hear their low rumbling as they communicate. Watch as mothers tend their babies. Listen to the rending crack as a mighty bull tears a branch from a fig tree.

Lion, Leopard And Cheetah Of Botswana
The abundance of antelope, zebra and plains game in Botswana means that there is plenty to attract the big cats. On a game drive, look out for a gorgeously coloured leopard relaxing in a sausage tree. This deceptively powerful cat can drag an antelope 30 feet into a tree to keep it from lions.

The lions are everywhere, roaming in large prides in Savuti, Chobe and the Linyanti. Cheetah are harder to spot. They favour the shorter grass plains and you may see one sitting atop a termite mound.

A Diversity Of Plains Game
While big cats can steal the show, your family will delight to see hundreds of other animal species. Each has an engaging character. Baboons are great fun to watch as they squabble and play. Ponderous buffalo, herds of zebra and journeys of giraffe roam the plains.
Watch as herds of impala will bound with liquid grace beside your vehicle, then stop and stare at you with those gorgeous eyes. Moments later you’ll see a warthog family trot primly to a waterhole. Suddenly a pod of hippo will surface with honking snorts and cavernous yawns, dispersing the birds and antelope in all directions.

Beautiful Birds Of Botswana
Botswana has around 600 species of birds and it’s fun to keep a record of the ones you see. Take a walk beside the Linyanti River as a pair of fish eagles, perched stoically in a jackalberry tree, look for fish.

Pause for a moment to watch a colourful Malachite kingfisher fluttering above the river before plunging in for its breakfast. Then a flock of pure white egrets might fly out of the sunrise, headed who knows where. The beautiful birds of Botswana are a constant presence and a continual delight!
