The dry season – June through November – is prime time to visit Katavi. Large herds of buffalo, antelope, elephant and other large game are drawn to the floodplains. It’s spectacular viewing for guests willing to make the journey, but Katavi is only accessible by small aircraft and doesn’t make it to the top of most itineraries.
With just a few small camps or the option for flycamping, blissful Katavi is truly a place to get away. Your only disturbances will be the snorts of hippo and the panting roar of lions at night. During the day, listen to the cry of the African fish eagle and watch cranes and storks delicately pick their way through the marsh. See vultures swooping in, often with hyenas not far behind. This is real Tanzanian wilderness.
- Extremely remote and tranquil.
- Ideally paired with the Mahale Mountains.
- Best game viewing during the dry season.
- Small, unfussy camps or flycamping.
- Open-vehicle safari and walking safaris.
