Lake Manyara

Famously described by Hemingway as the loveliest lake in Africa, Lake Manyara is home to flamingos, hippos and, curiously, tree-climbing lions. Flanked by the Rift Valley escarpment, this is one of the most scenic spots in northern Tanzania. Why Lake Manyara?
It’s not just anywhere you’ll find a pride of lions hanging out in an acacia tree, but it happens at Lake Manyara. Trees are further subject to occupation by troops of baboons, leopards or any number of birds – though you may hear the loud honk of a forest hornbill before you see it.

While most guests visit en route to Ngorongoro Crater, it’s a shame to rush off. Lake Manyara National Park is a great base for outdoor activities beyond watching wildlife. Go hiking, mountain biking, canoeing, or check out the thrilling – and perhaps intimidating – treetop walkway. You can also visit nearby villages and learn about diverse local cultures.
  • Remarkably beautiful lake setting.
  • See elephant, buffalo, leopard and tree-climbing lion.
  • Fantastic birdwatching, including flamingos and pelicans.
  • Great for active tourism with hiking, cycling and boating.
  • Easy to combine with Ngorongoro Crater or Tarangire.
