Kutandala Camp
Location
The lack of infrastructure means that the north is a place where exploration on foot is both unavoidable and the attraction to those who want an authentic safari experience. North Luangwa hosts Zambia’s only population of black rhino and is also home to large herds of herbivores, along with the predators that follow them. It’s a Big Five location, but an environment where visitors need to embrace the spirit of intrepid adventure.
Accommodation
The communal lounge is under a shady canopy, and meals are taken with fellow adventurers in camp-style comfort. The sense of camaraderie within an environment of adventure is amply facilitated by the staff, the food and drinks, the wonderful situation, and the communal comforts.
- This is Zambia’s only stronghold of the wild-roaming black rhino, making it the country’s only true Big Five location.
- Walking safaris are the most appropriate way to discover this area, and this gives a truly immersive, pure, and rewarding experience that will be savoured by safari connoisseurs.
- The camp does, however, offer vehicle safaris, though with a lack of road infrastructure, expect the going to be rather bumpy!
- Apart from rhino, other species to spot include the endemic Cookson’s wildebeest, the near-endemic Crawshay’s zebra, wild dogs, lions, and so much more. Buffalo herds can be thousand-strong, and elephants are common.
- With the permanent water supplies of the Kutandala, Mwaleshi and Luangwa rivers, there is an abundance of bird habitat and more than 400 recorded species. Treats include Pel’s fishing owl.

It’s also an experience of how African exploration always used to be, with bush camps deep in game-rich territory and walking safaris led by expert guides. Authenticity can still be comfortable, so amazing food and perfectly-placed accommodation are just as Zambian as the wilderness.
