North Luangwa is a rare, untouched corner of Africa, home to the highest density of elephants in Zambia, robust herds of buffalo, and the predators that follow them. Its Big Five status comes with a spirit of intrepid adventure: limited infrastructure means exploration on foot is both unavoidable and part of the park’s appeal, echoing the walking‑safari tradition pioneered in the Luangwa Valley. Once ravaged by poaching, North Luangwa has been transformed through decades of protection led by the Frankfurt Zoological Society, becoming one of Africa’s best and yet little-visited wildlife sanctuaries.
Location
Access is via Mwaleshi Airstrip, roughly 45 minutes’ flying time from Mfuwe, with charter connections also possible from Lusaka or the Lower Zambezi.
Accommodation
The camp has just five tents, accommodating a maximum of ten people, which ensures an atmosphere that is both peaceful and personal. Each tent is cool, spacious and set beneath its own canopy, with ensuite bathrooms featuring a flushing toilet and classic bucket shower.
The communal areas are deliberately understated, centred on a lounge set beneath deep shade and furnished in the familiar, unfussy style of Luangwa walking camps. It is a space for reading, watching the river, or sharing the day’s sightings with fellow travellers.
Meals are taken at a long table, often outdoors, with the camp’s team creating the relaxed camaraderie that defines North Luangwa’s safari culture. Food is prepared with care, and dining feels woven naturally into camp life rather than staged, reinforcing Kutandala’s ethos of genuine, low‑impact wilderness hospitality.
