Safari in Zambia: Remote & Private

Zambia is the path less-travelled, which means that a safari here is always one with guaranteed privacy. It’s also an experience of how African exploration always used to be, with bush camps deep in game-rich territory and walking safaris led by expert guides. Authenticity can still be comfortable, so amazing food and perfectly-placed accommodation are just as Zambian as the wilderness. Best Time To Go
May to November

There’s a seven-month dry season in Zambia, with the cooler months extending from May to August. From then to November, it may be hotter, but the vegetation thins out and animals gather reliably around water sources.

Ideal Length
14 days

Travel to remote locations can take a little longer but will always be worth the journey! We recommend spending 3-4 nights in each location for proper immersion and exploration.

Kafue
Established in 1950, Kafue is not only Zambia’s oldest national park; it’s also the largest. About the same size as Massachusetts, the park is a spacious wilderness with ample room for its lucky few visitors.

  • Explore the expansive plains around the Kafue River, home to a rich array of wildlife.
  • Take to the air for an early morning hot air balloon trip to appreciate the scale of the park.
  • Enjoy a boat trip on the river, spotting wallowing hippos.
  • Learn from expert guides on walking and driving safaris.
  • Venture out after dark, spotlighting nocturnal wildlife from the 4WD vehicle.
Days 6 - 10
Lower Zambezi
Formerly the private game reserve of Zambia’s president, the Lower Zambezi has long been protected from mass tourism. It sits on the opposite bank from Zimbabwe’s Mana Pools NP, creating a huge tract of wild riverine bushland.

  • Ornithologists love this area, which is home to beautiful Lilian’s Lovebird.
  • In addition to elephant, buffalo, leopard and lion, you may spot wild dogs.
  • It’s the perfect place for a canoe safari, which opens up a completely different way to see wildlife.
  • Head up the Muchinga Escarpment for impressive views over the river and the sandy flats.
  • Try your hand at catching a huge Zambezi tiger fish.
Days 11 - 15
North Luangwa
Less accessible and therefore more exclusive than South Luangwa NP, this area is an incredible Big Five walking safari destination. With only a few bush camps in a huge area, visitors get a glimpse of Africa as it once was.

  • For those who need to tick off the last of their Big Five, North Luangwa is home to Zambia’s only black rhino population.
  • The bush here is perfect for walking safaris, which are a great way to learn about the whole ecology of the wilderness.
  • Avid birdwatchers will love spotting beauties such as the narina trogon.
  • Cookson’s wildebeest are endemic to the Luangwa Valley, and you may see wild dogs.
  • Enjoy views of the Muchinga Escarpment, which rises over 1000 feet from the valley floor.

Musekese, Kafue

Tucked away in a quiet corner of Kafue National Park – itself a place that’s noted for its remarkably low visitor numbers – Musekese Camp is as quietly intimate as a safari camp gets. Peaceful is an understatement.

Kutali Camp, Lower Zambezi National Park

Desirably remote and authentically low-key, Kutali Camp is consciously a true safari camp in the best tradition of African exploration. This doesn’t mean it has no frills or comforts, but the priority is most definitely the exceptional wildlife experience.

Africa Zambia Luangwe Luambe Camp Main Area

A Personal Park

Imagine staying at a camp with an entire national park to itself. That’s exactly what you can do at Luambe Camp, which is the only accommodation within little-known Luambe National Park. Between North and South Luangwa National Parks, this tract of protected riverine bushland shares the same wild animal communities as its better-known neighbours. But, as one of the very few visiting humans, you’ll be a vastly outnumbered mammal.

The camp has just four spacious and luxurious tents perched on the edge of a river cliff overlooking the Luangwa River. Hot showers, great beds and homestyle cooking are just some of the perks. Activities on offer include overnight walking safaris, sleepouts, tree house dinners and stargazing picnics.
Africa Botswana Moremi Brian Gibson 3

Add Some Sharp Shots

A straightforward extension to this trip is to transfer via Victoria Falls to the Moremi Game Reserve of Botswana’s Okavango Delta. You’ll be in a new environment, famed for its rich diversity of wildlife, and in the capable hands of veteran guide Brian Gibson.

With decades of experience, Brian knows Moremi like no other, is an expert tracker, and has an encyclopaedic knowledge of the flora and fauna of his environment. As an Africa purist, his mobile camp is luxurious but equally matched by the location and the quality of guiding.

Brian is a superb photographic guide and a wonderful teacher of technique and composition, so a few days with him will ensure that you return home with plenty of photos to wow your friends (and yourself) forever. Anyone who loves their birds will also find a kindred spirit in Brian.
