A Calm Corner in Tortoise Country
Not a cruise, not a hotel, not a camp, but entirely itself, Montemar is a different way to experience the Galápagos. Created by Ecuadorian naturalist guides Reyna Oleas and Roberto Plaza, it grew from a decade‑long vision rooted in ecology, sustainable development and a deep love for these highlands. They moved from the mainland, lived without electricity for a year, planted coffee, restored habitat and welcomed scientists long before the villas existed.

Their hospitality is slow, thoughtful and grounded in place and community – a community that includes tortoises, finches and the people who share the island. Families thrive here: nature becomes a playground, and days fill with cooking classes, bonfires, treasure hunts and experiments inspired by Darwin. Reyna and Roberto shape each stay around ages and interests, with gentle adaptations for grandparents, ensuring everyone finds their rhythm.

Location

Set in the lush highlands of Santa Cruz Island, Montemar Eco Villas occupies a 17‑hectare (43-acre) sustainable farm at the heart of the Galápagos giant tortoise habitat. The property lies within a natural migratory corridor, meaning tortoises wander through the land daily; an experience unique to this part of the archipelago.

Located in the quiet El Carmen neighbourhood, Montemar sits just 20 minutes from Puerto Ayora and around an hour from Seymour Airport on Baltra Island. From this serene base, guests can easily explore highlands, dry forest, beaches, mangroves, volcanic landscapes and nearby uninhabited islands on guided day trips.

Accommodation
It’s said that choosing your neighbours matters as much as choosing the comfort of your home; and at Montemar Villas, you’re fortunate on both counts. Refined, spacious accommodation sits beside peaceful, fascinating neighbours: most huge, many venerable, all unmistakably Galápagos tortoises. With just two hand‑built villas shaped by the rhythms of island life and a deep respect for nature, Montemar feels like a private retreat – a place where families and multi‑generational groups settle into spaces designed for gathering, unwinding and simply being present in the quiet of the highlands.

Villa Tortuga is the larger home, welcoming up to eight guests. Its four bedrooms and three bathrooms give everyone room to breathe, while the kitchen, living and dining areas merge into a generous, easy‑flowing space.
Red cedar, bamboo and hand‑crafted details lend warmth throughout. Mornings spill onto the wide deck, where long lunches and barbecues unfold in the soft highland breeze. A yoga and massage room, a quiet office nook and views stretching to distant ocean horizons create a sense of deep, restorative calm.

A minute’s walk away, Villa Lechuza offers an intimate, light‑filled setting for up to four guests. Sliding windows open onto teak floors and an outdoor deck made for slow afternoons; reading in a hammock, sharing a meal outdoors, or watching the tortoises shifting in the changing light.

Though nature will keep you busy, meals become an important part of the day’s rhythm: breakfasts cooked to each person’s preference, farm‑to‑table dishes prepared in the open kitchens, and ingredients grown biodynamically on the property. Even the coffee is harvested and roasted at Montemar, grounding each day in the flavour of the land itself.

Experiences

  • Spend unhurried time among the tortoises, wandering through ponds, woodlands and the nearby lawns where they feed and move with quiet purpose, letting their presence shape the pace of the day.
  • Visit the Charles Darwin Research Station with a naturalist, observing finches up close and discovering how small shifts in beak shape and behaviour reveal a defining evolutionary story.
  • Bike, kayak, hike or navigate by boat as you move through coastlines, forests, lagoons and volcanic terrain, meeting the Galapagos’ iconic species in their natural settings.
  • Set sail from Santa Cruz to Santa Fe, Bartolomé, Plazas or North Seymour, exploring each island’s distinct wildlife with hand‑picked yachts on shared or private charters.
  • Walk through Montemar’s sustainable plantation, harvesting, fermenting and roasting coffee alongside the team, tasting the red‑bean brew born from the highland soil.
  • Share a meal in a fisherman’s home, meet artisans in their workshops, or join local recyclers to understand how the islands protect their fragile environment.

Why We Include Montemar Villas in Our Journeys

We include Montemar because it offers a way to experience the Galápagos that is more immersive and more personal than island‑hopping by boat. Staying in one place creates a deeper connection; and here that means with the land, with the people, and with the inspirational, sustainability‑driven story behind the project and its hosts.

It’s ideal for families and multi‑generational groups, with space to roam and the quiet magic of spending time among the tortoises. Day trips to nearby islands are easily arranged, and exclusive use of both villas is possible. Sometimes we use Montemar as a gentle beginning or end to a cruise, adding breathing space that elevates the journey.

Conservation
Conservation
Montemar has restored natural highland ponds, allowing tortoise numbers on the property to rise nearly tenfold in fifteen years. Their sustainable coffee plantation directly funds tortoise conservation, supporting long term habitat recovery and scientific monitoring. Protecting these ancient migratory routes is central to Montemar’s mission and daily practice.
Community
Community
Montemar’s ‘Hope Initiative’ strengthens local livelihoods through garden schools, community workshops and employment in the coffee plantation. Coastal clean‑ups – fifteen in three years – and more than fifty art‑recycling workshops foster environmental awareness and creativity. These programmes build skills, confidence and connection across Santa Cruz’s neighbourhoods.
Environment
Environment
Montemar operates with a low impact ethos: bidirectional solar power, LED lighting, natural ventilation and full grey and black water treatment. Its organic garden produces compost and natural fertiliser, while biodegradable cleaning products and a strict no plastics policy minimise waste. Every system is designed to work in harmony with the highland ecosystem.
