The populations of these elephants are very stable and they can often be seen standing on their hind legs reaching for the succulent fruit of the sausage tree.
Mana’s flood plains turn into a broad expanse of lakes after the rainy season and large numbers of zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, sable antelope, oryx, rare roan antelope and other wildlife can be seen visiting the numerous ‘pools’ from which the national park’s name is derived, while the river itself is home to numerous hippopotamus and crocodiles.
Meals are taken in the open-sided main lodge, where you will watch the sunset over the waters, before enjoying drinks and lively conversation around the campfire to end the day.
You might like to spend the latter part of the afternoon paddling a stable canoe on the Zambezi, your guide silently paddling you past pods of sleepy hippo as you watch animals coming down to drink and interact by the water’s edge.
Specialist open-topped vehicles take you further afield and at night a spotlight is used to see nocturnal creatures such as civet, aardvark, porcupine and leopard on the prowl.
Anyone who wants to try their hands at tiger fishing might catch a fish up to 20lbs and be assured of a good fight! A strict catch-and-release policy is observed.
