It All Started in Zimbabwe

It was during a trip to Zimbabwe visiting family that our founders, John and Susan Burdett, fell in love with the country. They returned to the UK fuelled by the spirit of Zimbabwe and felt compelled to share its wonders with others.

More than 30 years on, that seed has grown into the Journeysmiths ethos of curating wild, authentic safari experiences in many countries, but Zimbabwe retains its special status in the minds of the whole team.

Part of the Fabric of Journeysmiths

The first safari that John and Susan offered was on the theme of ‘Steam and Style’, combining incredible game-viewing with a two-day steam train ride that crossed the Zambezi on the old iron bridge at Victoria Falls. Such thrilling experiences and bespoke and unique travel arrangements remain the hallmark of a Journeysmiths safari, where the team continues the tradition of that first trip. Zimbabwe is woven into the fabric of our company, and, of course, it remains a place that we champion as a top safari destination.

Why We Love Zimbabwe

So entwined is Zimbabwe with Journeysmiths that we decided to celebrate our 30-year anniversary by returning to it. Our team navigated down the great Zambezi River, stopping off to walk with elephants in Hwange, enjoying sunsets on Lake Kariba, and feeling the thunder of mighty Victoria Falls. This wonderful experience bonded us together and with Africa, reminding us that Zimbabwe was just the start of a great adventure.

There’s nothing quite like sitting down with the team at Journeysmiths for creating an instant recipe for wanderlust! We’ve asked them to share what they love about Zimbabwe and to tell us why it is such a remarkable safari destination.
First Experiences
Appropriately, Zimbabwe was literally where I took my first steps—not that I remember, because I was only one year old at the time. My parents told me that I was blissfully ignorant of the fact that they left me asleep one night at the Hwange Safari Lodge while they went out for dinner. As if that wasn’t bad enough, when they tried to come back to me, an elephant blocked their way!

- Laura, MD of Journeysmiths
My first trip was when I explored the private Sapi Concession on the edge of the Mana Pools National Park. It was with Great Plains Conservation when they were just setting up their operation there. Everything was really wild, and it felt like it was an area that was going to become very special indeed. Time has proven me right.

What makes Zimbabwe special?

The quality of guiding in Zimbabwe is amazing, and it stands among the best in Africa. While the diverse landscapes and wildlife experiences are breathtaking, it's the expertise and skills of the guides that truly bring them to life. In Zimbabwe, it takes seven years of training to become a guide, so you can rest assured that on any safari, you’ll be in the most capable hands.

- Sue, Co-founder of Journeysmiths
Zimbabwe is a place of remarkable contrasts and rich experiences. One moment you’re soaring above the thunder of Victoria Falls; the next, gliding along the Zambezi at sunset with a drink in hand. You can spend your days tracking wildlife on foot with expert guides or gaining rare insights into conservation efforts behind the scenes. Warm welcomes, genuine conversations, and a glance into a different way of life offer a deeper connection to place. And when it’s time to pause, it’s a place to relax by the pool with a cool drink, indulge in a spa treatment, and savour beautifully prepared food and wine back at your lodge. Or, simply watch the world (and elephants) go by from the deck of your tented suite…it’s your choice. Zimbabwe is a unique destination, with just the right blend of discovery, connection, and comfort.

For me, it’s the welcoming, friendly nature of the people—you’d be hard-pressed to beat a Zimbabwean welcome! There is also an incredible variety of landscapes within just one country. It ranges from the banks of the Zambezi River in the Mana Pools National Park to the shimmering waters of Lake Kariba; the dry, forested plains of the Hwange National Parks; and of course, the majesty of Victoria Falls in full flow. It really offers so many different experiences in one country.

- Paul, Head of African Travel
Back in the 80s and 90s, Zimbabwe was one of Africa's premier safari destinations. Visitors were treated to rare opportunities to step out of the safari vehicle and truly connect with its stunning natural landscapes; all while being guided by some of the best in Africa. Despite the challenges Zimbabwe has faced over the intervening years, I’m thrilled to see it rising once again as an authentic safari destination.

What about families in Zimbabwe?

Well, I started going there as a toddler, but I would say that it’s a fantastic destination for families with older children, perhaps from age 10 upwards. If you have active teenagers, it would be one of the first places I would recommend. Combine three of the country’s most iconic regions—Victoria Falls, Hwange and Mana Pools—and you’ll have given them a trip of a lifetime and still only scratched the surface of what is possible.

What is your favourite lodge in Zimbabwe?

I’m an elephant fan, and for that reason I would encourage anyone to stay at Nehimba Lodge in Hwange National Park. It’s almost like having your own ellie-vision, because you can watch these wonderful animals from dawn until dusk. I loved watching them visiting the waterhole as I had dinner, finding it hard to look away from the spectacle. By the end of my stay I even started to realise the subtle hierarchy in the herd.

- Philippa, Head of Operations
That’s an unfair question! There are just too many great lodges in Zimbabwe. You can’t go wrong with Nyamatusi Camp at Mana Pools, though. The Imvelo Lodges in Hwange National Park, such as Bomani Tented Lodge and Camelthorne Lodge also take some beating. Both those places offer incredible game viewing. If I were to recommend somewhere with luxury, privacy, service and style, then it would probably be the Great Plains Tembo Plains Camp in the Sapi Concession. With a superb level of comfort, it’s right at the heart of an authentic wilderness area.

How about a hidden gem?

I love Kanga Camp, tucked deep in the Mana Pools National Park and away from the Zambezi River. It’s a real gem of a traditional camp by the Kanga Pool waterhole and totally private. The focus here is entirely on the safari—with exceptional game viewing enhanced by phenomenal guides, who consistently receive rave reviews.

- Paul, Head of African Journeys
One of the hidden gems in Zimbabwe is Mutarazi Falls, located in the Eastern Highlands within Nyanga National Park. The landscape here is truly breathtaking—sprawling and dotted with waterfalls, dramatic peaks, and hiking trails. As you approach Mutarazi Falls, the scene unfolds beautifully. From the short walking trail, you’re greeted with a stunning view: the falls to your right cascade over a massive drop, while to the left, the landscape stretches out into a lush wilderness. The view is dotted with rocky peaks as far as the eye can see. It’s a place where nature’s grandeur is felt in every direction.

- Alex, Head of Marketing
Our guide, Graeme, took us into the remote regions south of Kariba to an area of rivers and mountains called Manyuli. There are no lodges in this region, so we fly camped above a gorge. We woke at dawn and gazed upon an immense herd of buffalo far below as they headed to the river to drink. This is what travelling to Zimbabwe is all about for me: those moments of the wilderness that allow a deep connection to the natural world.

And your top wildlife experience?

I love the opportunity to see animals from the water in Mana Pools. The life-giving Zambezi River draws all manner of mammals to its banks, and to paddle gently past in a canoe at eye level with a lion on the riverbank is an unforgettable experience.

- Laura, MD
An unforgettable experience came in Matusadona National Park, where we watched a real-life scene from The Lion King. We spent six hours witnessing a fascinating feast around a hippo carcass on the shores of Lake Kariba. There was a pride of lions feeding, relaxing, and playing; numerous crocodiles, vultures, and marabou storks competing for scraps; and a herd of elephants, hippos, kingfishers, and countless birds watching the dramatic scene unfold. Those were the fastest six hours of my life, and a memory that will stay with me forever.

A Safari Like No Other

There are few other safari destinations that offer the sheer diversity of landscapes that Zimbabwe does. The cascading waters of Victoria Falls and forested banks of the Zambezi River contrast with the arid open plains of Hwange and the rugged mountain terrain of Matusadona. Together, they create a completely unique safari experience.
