The main lodge and nine thatched guest chalets perch on a sweeping stilted curve around this vital source of rehydration, and you’ll be able to enjoy a continuous spectacle of visiting wildlife from a Morris chair on the deck of your chalet or from all the communal areas.
The elephants get so close and bold that they often drain the swimming pool, which is consequently given over to them when water is scarce. It’s worth the sacrifice for the wonderful photos.
With open sides and a lofted thatched roof, the main lodge is cool in both temperature and ambience. Polished wood floors, rugs, deep sofas and stylish lighting create a luxuriously homely feeling in the lounges and bar. Delicious meals are served at a large communal table or on the deck.
Experiences
- Game drives are the focus of Nehimba, which you can enjoy in the early morning, late afternoon, or at night in vehicles limited to only seven guests.
- This area is known for its elephant-hunting lions. With more than 45,000 elephants in Hwange, there are plenty to go around.
- We recommend a walking safari, not to spot big game and carnivores, but to enjoy learning about the smaller fauna and flora, and to track animals by their spoor.
- Take the opportunity to visit the Nehimba Seeps, a place where elephants dig into the sand to reach the mineral-rich waters. Before the advent of boreholes, this was the main water supply for animals and San Bushmen during the dry season.
- Visit the Mtoa Ruins, which is an archaeological site thought to be related to rain-making rituals. You’ll see hut remains, platforms and mysterious monoliths.
- The rainy season is the prime period for birdwatching, with more than 400 species to spot. An ideal place is the nearby Mandavu Dam.

Hwange National Park stretches from the edge of the Kalahari Desert nearly to Victoria Falls, creating a diverse habitat rich with mammals and birds. Hwange is especially known for its large numbers of elephants – over 40,000 live here.
In the far north of Zimbabwe, Mana Pools National Park comprises the southern bank of the Zambezi River. The floodplains turn into a series of lakes following the rainy season, attracting a marvellous variety of mammals and birds.
The Matobo Hills rest in Zimbabwe’s south, defining the landscape with a range of domes, spires and granite rock formations. Black and white rhino roam the plateaus and kopjes of Matobo National Park.
The mighty Big Five roam the grasslands of Matusadona National Park. You can also see semi-aquatic antelope moving between the shores and river islands, while cheetah and African wild dog are never too far behind.
