Location
On the southern bank of the churning, powerful River Nile, and just 25 kilometres from Murchison Falls in Uganda, Papa’s Camp is ideally located for viewing the wildlife drawn to the river in this low-use zone of the Murchison Falls National Park.
Accommodation
Ernest ‘Papa’ Hemingway, after whom Papa’s Camp is named, once appropriately said, “The first and final thing you have to do in this world is to last it and not be smashed by it.” Following his own advice, he survived not one, but two plane crashes at this very spot. Modern visitors can expect less dangerous prospects but still have the thrill of a bankside location on the roaring River Nile while living in a rather exclusive Hemingwayesque manner. There are just five luxury ensuite tents set amid a fig tree grove. Spacious and airy, with the thrill of an outdoor shower, each tent is a combination of comfort and classic safari styling.
The perfect place for spotting hippos and crocs, perhaps accompanied by a glass of something chilled, is your tent’s terrace. Even when you head to the communal lounge, bar and dining tent, however, you won’t miss any of the river’s action thanks to the vistas provided through its open-sided design. Deep sofas, antique furniture, warm lighting, sumptuous textiles, and Persian carpets make for a blissful end to any day, but don’t forget to enjoy the firepit too.
Experiences
- There’s no need to risk Hemingway’s mode of aerial transport when 4WD vehicles are available for you to experience the surrounding national park; or perhaps just relax and fish.
- Take a game drive to Murchison Falls and back. The area has large populations of lions, buffalo, giraffes and numerous antelope species.
- Make sure you take up the opportunity of a night drive for the best chance of seeing leopards.
- A walking safari with an expert ranger offers a completely different perspective and is a great chance to learn about plants and the smaller, but no less fascinating, animals.
- Dining out under the stars, with the roar of the river as your background soundtrack, is an unforgettable experience.
- Papa’s camp is the perfect place to fish, whether you are a novice or a fanatic. It’s hard not to brag about having caught a fish in the Nile, no matter how large or small.
