A Wild Perch in the Galápagos Highlands
Honouring Charles Darwin and named for Pikaia gracilens – the tiny Cambrian creature believed to mark the dawn of vertebrate evolution – Pikaia Lodge is designed for travellers who seek adventure, environmental consciousness and close contact with the Galápagos’ extraordinary natural world. Dramatically located, the lodge offers flexible, land‑based exploration with small‑group guided land and marine programs, complemented by Relais & Châteaux‑level gastronomy and nights spent in serene highland comfort.

Many of the archipelago’s most fascinating islands lie close by, reached aboard the private 145‑foot M/Y Vision. Set within its own restored giant tortoise reserve, Pikaia embodies sustainable, low‑impact yet luxurious discovery in one of Earth’s most important landscapes.

Location

On the lush eastern side of Santa Cruz island, Pikaia Lodge stands at 450 metres above sea level, poised on the rim of two extinct volcanic craters. Once a cattle ranch, its 31 hectares have been painstakingly reforested with more than 11,000 native trees, transforming the land into a private, wild giant tortoise reserve.

The setting feels both remote and commanding – just 17 kilometres from Puerto Ayora (location of the Charles Darwin Research Station and famed Tortuga Beach) yet wrapped in sweeping highland views, volcanic silhouettes and the quiet, prehistoric presence of roaming tortoises. It’s one of the Galápagos’ most dramatic locations for land‑based exploration.

Accommodation

Pikaia Lodge offers fourteen rooms and suites, each framed by floor‑to‑ceiling windows and panoramic highland views, with upper‑level rooms projecting dramatically over the volcanic crater. Interiors combine sustainable bamboo flooring, king or queen beds and spacious, luxurious bathrooms. The pool suite, with its outlook toward Santa Fe and its secluded garden, is a particularly striking option.

The Homo Sapiens Explorers’ Lounge showcases works by local artists, houses an extensive library and hosts talks on Galápagos ecology and conservation. Guests can also watch immersive 3D Galápagos documentaries that deepen the experience of daily excursions.
Other facilities of the lodge include a spa with jacuzzi, sauna and treatment room, and a crater‑side infinity pool that catches the sun throughout the day, overlooking the forested hills where giant tortoises roam.

Dining follows Relais & Châteaux standards, with a menu that changes daily according to the chef’s creativity and the availability of local, sustainably sourced ingredients. Fossil‑inlaid tables set the scene for fresh fruit juices and Ecuadorian favourites at breakfast, and for seafood‑focused dinners with thoughtful alternatives.

Sustainability underpins the lodge’s ethos: solar panels and wind turbines generate most of its energy, rainwater is harvested from the roofs, and guests are invited to plant a native tree before departing – a personal and symbolic contribution to the highlands’ ongoing restoration.

Why We Include Pikaia Lodge in Our Journeys

Pikaia Lodge combines a phenomenal setting with exceptional comfort and consistently excellent food, offering an immersive experience of Santa Cruz that many travellers prefer to the confines of a live‑aboard boat. Days are spent exploring, and evenings return you to spacious surroundings, refined service and a crater‑side pool with sweeping highland views.

For those who want, the lodge also preserves the freedom of island‑hopping forays. Its own fleet – from the large luxury yacht to the nimble snorkelling and fishing boat and the world‑class dive vessel – opens access to the wider archipelago. It’s superb for families too, with roaming tortoises, mountain bikes and the engaging Homo Sapiens Explorers’ Lounge.

Conservation
Conservation
Pikaia Lodge stands on a former cattle ranch where native vegetation had been entirely cleared. A long‑term restoration programme has replanted more than 10,000 endemic trees, eliminated pasture and invasive species, and encouraged the return of wild giant tortoises and native birds. This regeneration now significantly offsets the lodge’s carbon emissions.
Community
Community
Pikaia Lodge works closely with the neighbouring El Cascajo community, providing employment and supporting local initiatives. It funds an additional teacher at the village school, has donated materials for church repairs, and contributed to road improvements. As the first Galápagos hotel to complete a full environmental licensing process, it also sets a benchmark for responsible development.
Environment
Environment
Designed to meet the highest environmental standards, Pikaia Lodge blends contemporary eco‑architecture with low‑impact construction. Solar energy, rainwater harvesting and advanced water‑treatment systems minimise resource use, while biodegradable products and endemic landscaping reduce ecological footprint. A pioneering recycling programme ships used oils back to the mainland, preventing pollution and supporting sustainable local enterprise.
