Location

At a latitude of almost 70° north, there are few places that could claim to be more ‘polar’ on mainland Europe than Sorrisniva. It’s about 20 kilometres upriver from the stunning shores of Altafjord, home to the world’s most northerly ‘city’: 10,000-strong Alta.

Accommodation

Perched on a bankside location above the Gammelbolllo River, Sorrisniva offers 24 permanent rooms, with additional accommodation in winter carved out of the seasonal offering of ice and snow into the ‘Igloo Hotel’.

If you opt for the warmer choice, your room is the epitome of Scandinavian modernist style, with clean lines, plentiful wood, sophisticated furniture in earthy tones, and enormous triple-glazed windows looking out over the majestic tundra and boreal forests.

In order not to miss a moment of the Aurora Borealis, even from your bed, you’ll find the windows extend into the roof. An adjacent sheltered private balcony adds further viewing possibilities, and it’s the perfect place for a strong early morning coffee.
Around the lodge, you’ll find plenty of snug fireside lounging places, all with tremendous panoramas of the awesome setting. Of course, as this is Scandinavia, the lodge has superb spa and sauna facilities.

Breakfast and lunch are enjoyed in the circular Lavvu Restaurant, a space designed to emulate the feel of a Sami tent, while fine dining in the evening is to be found in the Maku Restaurant. Culinary delights include reindeer, seasonal berries, local salmon, and king crab caught in the nearby port of Honningsvåg.

Experiences

  • In winter, a whole host of snow-based activities are possible, such as snowshoeing, snowmobile treks, ice carving, husky sledding, ice swimming, and cross-country skiing.
  • Nighttime activities vary seasonally but are all magical. In the summer, venture out to experience the midnight sun, and in winter discover the majesty of the aurora.
  • See rock carvings of hunter-gatherer lifestyle in Alta, the world’s most northerly ‘city’, a settlement with just 10,000 inhabitants.
  • Head out onto Altafjord for whale-watching opportunities or to fish for enormous king crabs.
  • Even if your tendency is for comfortable warmth, why not have a night in the igloo hotel? Piles of reindeer skins are more comfortable than you might imagine, and the sense of quiet peace is serene.
  • Hiking opportunities abound, but you could also experience the landscape from the back of a horse or on an electric bicycle.
  • Take a riverboat to the Alta Canyon, Europe's largest river canyon, or have a go at packrafting.

Though you won't see the Northern Lights between May and August, the day-round 'midnight sun' is equally unique to experience.
