Location

Located in the remote reaches of Northern Norway, just beyond the Arctic Circle and close to the Sami heartland, the Sorrisniva Igloo Hotel rises each winter on the banks of the Alta River. Surrounded by untouched snowfields and the dramatic terrain of the Finnmark region, this ephemeral masterpiece is crafted entirely from snow and ice.

Inside, hand-carved ice sculptures, glowing lights, and frozen chambers create a dreamlike atmosphere, offering guests an unforgettable night in one of the most extraordinary settings on earth.

Accommodation

For nomadic people such as the reindeer-herding Sami of Arctic Scandinavia, the need to build temporary residential structures is intrinsic to a way of life spent searching for grazing. Luckily for them, the construction material for a winter abode does not need to be carried, for it lies abundantly around: snow. In skilled hands, snow and ice can rapidly be transformed into a highly insulated and cosy cocoon providing shelter from frigid high latitude winds and long, bitter nights.

For those who crave an authentic and alternative Arctic foray, the Igloo Hotel at Sorrisniva Wilderness Lodge is an unforgettable experience. Reconstructed from ice and snow each winter, and therefore always different and innovative, this ephemeral delight showcases fairytale ice sculptures and allows guests to enjoy spaces that are “cool” in more ways than one. Epitomising this is the Ice Bar, a crystalline wonder where the joke is always: “Do you want ice with that?”
Having honed their skills on the Igloo Hotel for more than 25 years, the construction team has become ever more creative and skilled. The showcase for their flair is the ethereally beautiful chapel; just one part of a place made even more special by the knowledge that it will all melt away in the summer.

Each of the guestrooms and suites in the Igloo Hotel is a unique creation, handcrafted by ice sculptors working on 250 tonnes of ice and more than 7,000 cubic metres of snow. The centrepiece of each is an extra-large ice bed, topped with a highly insulated mattress and a generous pile of soft reindeer hides.

While you will need to pack some warm pyjamas and a hat, the provided sleeping bag means that a night in the igloo hotel is not as cold as you would imagine. What usually strikes people more is the utter silence.
