Location

At an altitude of 2,200 metres, Trogón Lodge sits at the heart of San Gerardo de Dota, a community of just over 200 people strung along the edge of the Quetzal National Park. Air from the Pacific Ocean rises up the slopes of the Talamanca Mountains each afternoon, condensing to produce lush cloud forests.

Accommodation

Charmingly rustic and unpretentious, Trogón Lodge is a cluster of chalets spread over the bankside slopes of the Savegre River. The focal point is a trout pond, the fresh produce from which, accompanied by vegetables from the hydroponic garden, is a staple of the lodge’s restaurant. Breakfasts feature plenty of homemade bread and delicious marmalade.

The cosy communal areas of the lodge are the place to be in the late afternoon as the clouds roll in. Grab a book from the take-and-give library, curl up on a sofa, sip a drink from the bar, check out the collection of vintage radios, or have a game of pool.
The 24 standard rooms are paired with shared balcony decks that come with rocking chairs, all the better for watching the hummingbirds buzz by. With wooden interiors and simple furnishings, the rooms are cabin-like and feel completely appropriate for their lush mountain environment.

They’re comfortable and homey, but don’t expect luxuries such as a TV or Wi-Fi. If extra space and bird’s-eye vista are required, opt for the superior chalet, though only if you don’t mind the extra climb to get to it.

Experiences & Activities

While not as famous as Monteverde, Costa Rica’s other main area of Cloud Forest, the slopes of the Talamanca Mountains are clad in a very similar ecosystem thanks to their moist, cool climate.

  • Head into the 5,000 hectares of the Quetzal National Park to spot the famous feathered namesake: the resplendent quetzal. There’s no mistaking this outrageously fancy and beautiful bird.
  • Other birds abound in the cloud forest, so Trogón Lodge is a mecca for ornithologists. Prepare to spot tanagers, black guans, hummingbirds, trogons, and woodpeckers. Our favourite is the characterful green toucanet.
  • Just wandering round Trogón Lodge’s gardens is a treat in itself. Pack your macro lens for flower photos.
  • Venture out to do some tracking. Baird’s tapirs live in the area and have very distinctive footprints. There are often also signs of pumas.
  • Head higher into the Paramo zone at an altitude of over 3000 metres. Up there, on Cerro de la Muerte, you’ll see a whole new community of birds.

The lodge was awarded an Ecological Blue Flag award for its management of its micro-watershed feeding the Savegre River. It also has a Certificate for Sustainable Tourism thanks to policies such as using more than 50% organic produce in the restaurant and its commitment to recycling and waste reduction.

In a small and remote valley, Trogón Lodge is an important contributor to the local economy and provides long-term employment for the inhabitants of the surrounding villages that is in harmony with the protection of their unique environment.
Conservation
Conservation
The design of the Trogón Lodge development paid close attention to the principle that the forest must not be unduly encroached upon. There is also a programme of tree planting to enhance the local cloud forest habitat. This reforestation has been ongoing for more than a decade.
