The most rewarding window is when conditions align across all regions: the Amazon is drier with easier trails, the Sacred Valley enjoys clear skies and excellent trekking, and the Galápagos bursts with nutrient‑rich waters that heighten wildlife activity. This combination gives the journey its most balanced and satisfying flow.
There’s a lot to fit in, and the scope of this journey – along with its varied transfers – calls for a sensible amount of time. Three weeks allows the itinerary to unfold properly, delivering real diversity and a rich sense of place, with even more possible if you choose to extend it.
This itinerary is just one example of a journey that we put together for families with teenagers. At Journeysmiths, we craft every journey around your interests, your pace, your idea of perfection. Let this spark your imagination, then get in touch and we’ll shape something that feels unmistakably your own.

From the Team
“If you’ve got plenty of get‑up‑and‑go – perhaps with teenagers who share the same spark – a trip like this will bond you for life through a succession of unbelievable experiences. It threads together everything that’s magical about this part of the world.”
Lima, Peru
Lima’s contemporary energy bubbles up in Miraflores and Barranco, where ocean‑view promenades, galleries, cafés and street art create a vibrant counterpoint to the historic core. Superb museums, including the Larco, illuminate Peru’s ancient civilizations, while Huaca Pucllana places pre‑Incan ruins directly within the cityscape.
And then there’s the food: it’s a global culinary magnet defined by cevicherías, Afro‑Peruvian traditions and celebrated restaurants drawing on Andean, Amazonian and coastal flavours.
Mornings unfold on the 11th‑floor Observatory terrace, where breakfast is paired with fantastic ocean panoramas. By afternoon, that view is often enhanced by paragliders traversing the updrafts. A rooftop pool and an excellent fitness centre help shake off the long‑haul cobwebs, though it’s worth saving your energy for exploring Lima’s neighbourhoods, museums and shoreline, all right on your doorstep.
The following day is devoted to Lima’s celebrated culinary scene, starting in bohemian Barranco for great coffee and a vibrant market, followed by a classic Peruvian lunch by the ocean. The afternoon is left free to stroll Miraflores Malecón (clifftop walkway), perhaps enjoying Parque del Amor, with its romantic mosaics.
Peruvian Amazon
At its heart lies the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, one of Peru’s great wildernesses. Often called the Jungle of Mirrors for the way still backwaters reflect the forest, it sits between the Marañón and Ucayali rivers, just before they merge to form the Amazon itself. This is one of the most biodiverse flooded forests on Earth, home not only to remarkable species but also to Indigenous Cocama‑Cocamilla and other communities who rely on fishing and forest resources while helping to protect this vital ecosystem.
Just 20 river‑facing suites keep the experience intimate, each with floor‑to‑ceiling windows that frame constant views of forest and water. Interconnecting suites make it ideal for families, while a shaded pool deck, spa, gym and games room offer welcome downtime. Teenagers will appreciate reliable Wi‑Fi, and the one‑to‑one crew‑to‑guest ratio ensures exceptional service throughout.
Out on the river you might spot pink river dolphins slicing through the water, sloths draped over branches, troops of monkeys crashing through the canopy and bursts of vibrant birdlife flashing overhead. There’s time for swimming, and piranha fishing adds a mischievous thrill. A visit to Santa Cruz village includes a gentle cycle to Puerto Prado and a stop with a local beekeeper, while another outing takes you to a manatee rescue centre; a quietly moving highlight for families and wildlife lovers alike.
Cusco, Peru
The Plaza de Armas anchors the historic centre with its imposing architecture, while nearby San Blas offers cobbled streets, artisan workshops and a creative, bohemian spirit. At 3,400 metres, the altitude lends a clarity to the air and a drama to the surrounding mountains, making every viewpoint feel cinematic.
While the rainforest is a place of physical layers, Cusco’s layers are historic: Inca engineering, Spanish‑era architecture and contemporary Andean culture combine in a city that forms a perfect upland counterpoint to your days in the Amazon.
Suites are generously appointed with freestanding baths, underfloor heating and oxygen‑enriched air to help with acclimatisation. Families can opt for interconnecting layouts, and a private butler is available if you want to lean fully into the luxury. It’s a serene, elegant base that feels both historic and deeply comfortable at high altitude.
For something more active, an e‑bike ride to Cusco’s hilltop ruins is a winner with families. The electric assist makes exploring at altitude feel effortless as you follow an expert local guide to Sacsayhuaman, Q’enqo, Puka Pukara and Tambomachay. Discovering the city’s Inca past this way is fast, fun and easy on the legs and lungs.
Sacred Valley, Peru
Its cultural identity is deeply Quechua, referring to the Indigenous communities and languages of the Andes whose traditions – weaving, farming, festivals and everyday craftsmanship – remain central to the valley’s character. You see these layers most clearly in towns such as Pisac and Ollantaytambo, where Inca stonework, Spanish‑era buildings and living Quechua culture sit side by side.
What makes the Sacred Valley so enticing is its blend of culture and outdoor opportunities: big skies and steep mountains create a backdrop for adventures that are both physical and cultural.
Beyond your casita, you’ll find an outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts, a gym and a spa with steam room, sauna and jacuzzi. Sol y Luna’s Wayra stables add something special: traditional cooking techniques, atmospheric open‑air dining, and sublimely elegant Peruvian Paso horse displays accompanied by Andean music.
An ATV excursion offers another hit of adrenaline, looping around the valley to the remarkable concentric terraces of Moray and the spectacular Maras salt pans, harvested since pre‑Columbian times. Finally, a guided exploration of Ollantaytambo reveals narrow cobbled streets and one of the few Inca‑era settlements still lived in today, with climbs to the Temple of the Sun delivering huge valley views.
Machu Picchu, Peru
What makes Machu Picchu so compelling is not just its dramatic setting but its mystery: a perfectly planned Inca sanctuary of temples, terraces and ritual spaces, all aligned with the mountains and the movement of the sun. The stonework is astonishingly precise, the views vast and shifting as clouds drift across the peaks, and the atmosphere feels almost suspended in time.
Walking through its gateways and plazas, you sense both the sophistication of Inca engineering and the isolation that kept this place hidden for so long. In this place where landscape, history and imagination converge, savour a truly special experience.
Casitas range in size, with larger family options offering private terraces and plunge pools. Wrapped in the misty atmosphere of the mountains, the pueblo is a peaceful base from which to explore the citadel.
The next morning offers a second entry to the ruins, ideal for exploring lesser‑visited corners such as the Temple of the Moon or the Inca Bridge, with some choosing the steep climb to Huayna Picchu. Then comes another joy: re‑boarding the Hiram Bingham, this time for the scenic – and probably pleasantly snooze‑filled – journey back to Cusco.
Today, Quito’s Centro Histórico is one of Latin America’s most atmospheric old quarters and was among the first cities ever inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Baroque churches, steep colonial streets and broad plazas sit framed by volcanic peaks. The city feels both ancient and energetic, with neighbourhoods like La Ronda and La Floresta adding cafés, street art and a youthful creative edge.
The hotel’s restaurant adds a further touch of distinction, its ceiling mural by Ecuadorean artist Lucía Falconi presiding over a menu known for its excellent soups. Guests can unwind on the rooftop terrace with views over the historic centre, retreat to the library, slip into the perfumed garden, or indulge in high tea on the covered patio – all part of this sanctuary in the heart of the city.
The tour continues to San Francisco Plaza, home to the city’s oldest church and convent, before heading north to the Middle of the World. At the Intiñan Museum, you’ll explore exhibits on indigenous cosmology, stand on the equatorial line, and try hands‑on demonstrations that reveal the quirks of gravity and balance at zero latitude. It’s a playful finale to a rich cultural day.
Galápagos Archipelago
Lying some 1,000 km off Ecuador’s coast, this remote archipelago of 13 major islands owes its uniqueness to isolation, young volcanic geology, varied habitats and the meeting of plankton-laden ocean currents. Together, they have created a “living laboratory” in which species have diverged in remarkable ways: giant tortoises, marine iguanas, flightless cormorants and the finches that later carried Darwin’s name.
First recorded in 1535, the islands were famously described three centuries later by Charles Darwin during his voyage on HMS Beagle, observations that sparked a scientific breakthrough and reshaped global thought. This isn’t just a place to see astonishing wildlife, it’s somewhere to contemplate life itself.
Days follow a rewarding rhythm of twice‑daily excursions: guided walks with specialist naturalists, kayaking, paddleboarding, snorkelling and Zodiac outings. Dining is superb, and when the weather cooperates, dinner is served under the stars, an astronomer tracing constellations with a laser pointer across the inky, dark sky. Indoors, the lounge and dining room, wrapped in a 180° panorama, host lectures and briefings that deepen your understanding of this exceptional journey.
Days are spent plunging into chilly waters to swim with playful sea lions, watching marine iguanas graze, and sharing the currents with turtles and the occasional penguin. Guided walks lead through forests of opuntia cacti where land iguanas bask, and into habitats alive with Darwin’s finches and even flamingos. There’s paddleboarding and kayaking too, and hikes across lava‑sculpted landscapes that reveal the islands’ raw geological heart.
Guayaquil, Ecuador
Guayaquil itself has many facets: gleaming riverside developments along the Malecón 2000, colourful neighbourhoods climbing the slopes of Las Peñas, and a thriving culinary scene shaped by coastal flavours. The broad Guayas River defines the city’s rhythm, with promenades, galleries and cafés lining its banks. It’s a place to savour coastal culture and enjoy a gentle, atmospheric pause before your onward journey.
