The Peruvian Amazon

The incredible Amazon rainforest covers 60% of Peru, yet the country holds just 13% of the total Amazon. This expansive, lush rainforest is one of the most biodiverse regions in the world. Why Visit the Amazon?
The Peruvian Amazon is sparsely populated, giving it a wonderfully remote and untouched feel. This thickly forested region encompasses vast lowland rainforest, home to an astonishing array of birds, plant species and rainforest mammals. In the south, the Tambopata National Reserve protects one of the most wildlife-rich areas of the Amazon, combining exceptional biodiversity with access to well-run, comfortable jungle lodges set deep within the forest.

Here, expert naturalist guides lead you along quiet trails where sightings can include great tinamou, rufescent tiger-heron, mountain caracara and mitred parakeet, among countless others. Wildlife encounters are no less compelling beyond the birdlife. Jaguars, ocelots, marmosets, armadillos and elusive tayras all call this verdant paradise home.

We arrange immersive stays in carefully chosen jungle lodges set deep within protected reserves, or aboard comfortable river boats cruising the waterways of the northern jungle. Explored on foot or by river, the Amazon rewards unhurried discovery, shaped around your pace and interests.

Amazon Travel: Your Questions Answered

When planning a journey into the Amazon, travellers often ask us about wildlife, seasons, where to go and how travel works on the ground. We’ve answered some of the most common questions below to help you understand what to expect. When planning a journey into the Amazon, travellers often ask us about wildlife, seasons, where to go and how travel works on the ground. We’ve answered some of the most common questions below to help you understand what to expect.

What wildlife can you expect to see in the Peruvian Amazon?
Wildlife sightings vary by region and season, but the Peruvian Amazon is known for its extraordinary biodiversity. You can expect vibrant birdlife, colourful clay licks and a wide range of mammals, including species such as jaguar, ocelot and several species of monkeys such as squirrel monkeys, howler monkeys, woolly monkeys, spider monkeys and capuchins. Experiences are led by expert naturalist guides who know how to read the forest and maximise what you see.

You can explore this in more detail in our Wildlife of Deepest Darkest Peru article or see how the Amazon fits into a journey such as our Family Adventure in Peru or Luxury Tailormade Peru Journey trip ideas.
When is the best time to visit the Peruvian Amazon?
The Amazon can be visited year-round, with each season offering something different. Drier months from May to October generally bring easier walking conditions, while the wetter months create lush scenery and are particularly good for river exploration. We’ll advise on timing as part of your wider Peru itinerary.
Which part of the Peruvian Amazon is best for wildlife?
Two regions stand out for wildlife viewing in the Peruvian Amazon, each offering a slightly different experience. Tambopata National Reserve, in the southern Amazon near Puerto Maldonado, is known for its rich lowland rainforest, excellent macaw clay licks and strong chances of spotting mammals such as monkeys, giant river otters and, with luck, jaguar. It’s relatively easy to access and works well for lodge-based stays.

In the northern Amazon, the Pacaya-Samiria Reserve is a vast, river-based ecosystem often explored by boat. Wildlife experiences here focus on flooded forests, pink river dolphins, manatees and abundant birdlife along remote waterways.
We match the region carefully to your interests, the pace you prefer and how you’d like to explore – whether that’s from a jungle lodge or aboard a river cruise.
How do you reach the Amazon rainforest in Peru?
All Amazon journeys begin with a flight from Lima to Puerto Maldonado or Iquitos, followed by a short boat or road transfer to your authentic Amazon lodge or luxury river vessel. All logistics are arranged in advance so the journey flows smoothly.

You can see how this fits into a wider itinerary on our Luxury Peru: A Tailor-Made Journey page.
What are Amazon lodges like?
Amazon lodges range from simple eco-retreats to beautifully designed, comfortable bases set deep within protected rainforest. We select lodges that strike the right balance between comfort, guiding quality and access to wildlife, ensuring your time in the Amazon feels immersive without sacrificing ease.

Days are typically shaped around guided jungle walks, river excursions, wildlife spotting and night-time exploration, led by expert naturalist guides who adapt activities to the season and your interests. Between outings, lodges offer relaxed spaces to rest, observe wildlife from the riverbanks or canopy, and enjoy excellent local cuisine — allowing the experience to feel both enriching and unhurried.
Is the Amazon suitable for families?
Yes, particularly for families with older children and teenagers who enjoy nature and being outdoors. With private guiding, activities can be adapted around energy levels, interests and the pace that works best for your family.

You can see examples of how this works in practice on our Peru Family Holidays page or within our Family Adventure in Peru itinerary example.
How many nights should you spend in the Amazon?
We generally recommend at least three nights in the southern Amazon when staying at a lodge, allowing time for a good range of river and forest excursions at a relaxed pace. In the northern Amazon, where journeys are often river-based on boats, we usually suggest a minimum of four nights to fully appreciate the experience and wildlife.
