Location

Situated close to Cape Town and the Garden Route, Grootbos Private Nature Reserve is set on a hill above Walkers Bay with beautiful views of the dunes, the sea and the distant Cape of Good Hope. Garden Lodge is set among 17km² of pristine fynbos, with over 650 indigenous plant species and over 50 Red Data species. It also has the largest private fynbos garden and one of the largest milkwood forests in the world. Smaller mammals such as bush buck, porcupine, grey duiker and lynx can also be found within the Grootbos Nature Reserve.

Sophisticated Family Accommodation

Surrounded by landscaped gardens and indigenous trees, Garden Lodge is made of stone, timber and thatch, and features curved lines, high ceilings and endless glass windows. The atmosphere is fresh, free and welcoming. The lodge itself comprises 11 freestanding, air-conditioned suites, with two-bedroomed suites designed specifically for families.
These stylish suites operate as mini-villas, offering extra space and privacy between you and your neighbours. Inside you’ll find spacious rooms, cosy fireplaces and a private, wooden viewing deck with superb panoramic views out over the forest, mountains and sparkling ocean.

In the main area of the lodge is the spacious lounge, library, children’s play room, spa and wellness area, and an elegant restaurant. A wooden decking area, terrace and pool are the perfect spot for relaxing, cooling off and splashing about outside under the African sun. There’s also the well-kept horse stable and small outdoor play area with a petting farm filled with friendly creatures that children can feed and play with.

No Fear of Boredom at Grootbos

The 2,500 hectare reserve combines its passion for the environment with a number of ways to explore. There’s something exciting for guests of every age. Set out on horseback or bikes to explore the coastal meadows. A leisurely 4x4 botanical safari is the best way to learn about the reserve.

Off shore, embark on marine safaris and watch dolphin pods leaping in the wake and gentle southern right whales surfacing for air. Amp up the adrenaline and try cage diving with great whites! It doesn’t end there. Enjoy a sunset river cruise, take walks and hikes, join guides for bird watching, learn about beekeeping and in between all that, parents can treat themselves to spa treatments and children can enjoy some downtime in the playroom.

Treasure Hunts and Pet Pigs
Families are particularly welcomed at Grootbos, and a host of children’s activities are possible to ensure that guests of all ages are kept excited and interested at all times.

Organised treasure hunts are regular favourites of younger visitors as well as interacting with the rabbits, ducks and ‘pet’ pig in the playground, enjoying creative arts and crafts time and exploring the beautiful natural surroundings. Special children’s menus are offered in the restaurant and child-minding services are also available.
